Systems Development Engineer Jobs in Vermont: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a systems development engineer in Vermont?
Systems development engineering in Vermont has no state-issued license or registration requirement, so hiring follows an education-and-experience path. Most Vermont employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical discipline. Candidates who supplement that foundation with vendor certifications in cloud platforms or DevOps tooling, particularly from AWS or HashiCorp, move faster through hiring pipelines at Vermont's technology and defense-sector employers.
How much do systems development engineers make in Vermont?
Systems development engineers in Vermont earn a median of about $125,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,480 for the lowest 10% to over $209,420 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire systems development engineers in Vermont?
Companies currently hiring systems development engineers in Vermont include Beta Technologies, National Life, and Vermont Electric Power Company, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Which Vermont cities have the most systems development engineer jobs?
The cities with the most systems development engineer openings in Vermont are South Burlington, Rutland, and Montpelier. Burlington anchors the market as Vermont's largest city and home to its most concentrated cluster of technology, financial services, and defense employers, while Montpelier generates openings tied to state government IT initiatives and nearby anchor institutions that draw engineering talent to the broader Chittenden County region.
Are there remote systems development engineer jobs in Vermont?
Yes, and more than most fields, since systems development engineering is fundamentally desk and cloud-based work that travels well. About 17% of systems development engineer openings tied to Vermont are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the role's strong fit for distributed teams. The portions of the work most commonly done remotely are infrastructure automation, code review, and pipeline maintenance, while on-call incident response and architecture reviews sometimes require periodic on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a systems development engineer in Vermont with little or no experience?

IBM's Burlington operations and Vermont's growing fintech sector regularly bring in associate-level engineers through new-graduate hiring cycles. Building a public portfolio of infrastructure-as-code projects on GitHub and earning an AWS Cloud Practitioner or HashiCorp Terraform Associate certification gives Vermont hiring managers concrete evidence of hands-on capability before a first professional role.
