Software Engineer Jobs in Vermont: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer in Vermont?
Vermont does not require a state-issued license to work as a software engineer. Most employers in the state hire based on a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field, combined with a portfolio of projects or internship experience. Candidates targeting defense or government contractors in Vermont should note that many roles require or prefer candidates eligible for a federal security clearance, which becomes a practical hiring credential in that sector.
How much do software engineers make in Vermont?
Software engineers in Vermont earn a median of about $125,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,480 for the lowest 10% to over $209,420 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software engineers in Vermont?
Companies currently hiring software engineers in Vermont include CVS Health, Speechify, and Schneller, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Vermont's mix of semiconductor manufacturing, financial software firms, and academic medical institutions means software engineering roles appear across a wider range of industries than the state's size might suggest.
Which Vermont cities have the most software engineer jobs?
Burlington, Vermont, and Vergennes are the Vermont cities with the most software engineer openings. Burlington anchors the market as the state's largest city, home to a dense cluster of tech companies, UVM's research enterprise, and fintech firms, while Montpelier draws state government IT work and the Upper Valley draws defense and manufacturing software roles tied to employers along the New Hampshire border.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in Vermont?
Yes, and more than most fields. Software engineering is one of the most remote-compatible professions, and Vermont employers have broadly adopted flexible arrangements. About 71% of software engineer openings tied to Vermont are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting both the nature of the work and Vermont's geography. Backend, cloud, and data engineering roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while embedded systems and hardware-adjacent roles are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a software engineer in Vermont with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or co-op through the University of Vermont or Vermont Technical College, both of which have established pipelines into Burlington-area employers and state government IT teams. Candidates can also target junior developer or QA engineer roles as a first step, or move laterally from IT support or systems administration positions. A strong GitHub portfolio demonstrating personal or academic projects carries significant weight with Vermont hiring managers in the absence of professional experience.
Where can I find and apply to software engineer jobs in Vermont?
You can find and apply to software engineer jobs in Vermont on Migrate Mate, which lists current Vermont openings from employers across Burlington, Montpelier, and the broader state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly.
