Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an AI Intern
Confirm your CIP code covers AI work
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM OPT designated degree list before applying. Computer science, data science, and statistics CIP codes typically qualify, but applied mathematics or information systems codes vary by program.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your recruiter for the company's E-Verify Company ID or confirm enrollment directly through the E-Verify employer search. An employer not enrolled in E-Verify cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT, regardless of how far along you are in the hiring process.
Build your I-983 training plan around AI deliverables
Work with your hiring manager to document specific learning objectives tied to your AI internship tasks, such as model training pipelines, data labeling workflows, or evaluation frameworks. USCIS reviewers look for concrete skill development, not generic job descriptions, in your training plan.
Target startups with E-Verify through Migrate Mate
Many early-stage AI companies that would hire interns aren't listed on traditional employer databases. Search Migrate Mate to find AI intern roles filtered for E-Verify-enrolled employers, saving you the step of manually vetting each company before applying.
Research prevailing wages for your AI internship level
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your internship's SOC code and location before negotiating compensation. Employers filing training plans under STEM OPT must pay you a wage that doesn't displace U.S. workers, and knowing the range strengthens your position.
File your STEM OPT extension at least 90 days early
Submit your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS no later than 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. Filing late forfeits your cap-gap protection and can create an authorization gap even if your new employer has already started onboarding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI Intern role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your underlying degree is on the DHS STEM OPT designated degree list and the AI Intern position requires you to apply knowledge from that field. Computer science, data science, and electrical engineering degrees commonly qualify. Your DSO confirms eligibility by matching your degree's CIP code to the approved list before recommending the extension on your I-20.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my AI Intern employer?
Every employer who hires a STEM OPT student must be enrolled in E-Verify, the federal employment eligibility verification program administered by DHS. You can confirm enrollment by asking the employer for their E-Verify Company ID or searching the E-Verify employer database directly. Working for a non-enrolled employer invalidates your STEM OPT authorization, even if your EAD is still valid.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an AI internship?
The I-983 requires your employer to identify specific learning objectives, the supervision structure, and how the internship relates to your STEM degree. For an AI internship, this typically means documenting skills like machine learning model development, data pipeline design, or AI evaluation methods. Both you and your employer sign the form, and your DSO must receive it before your extension is approved.
How does cap-gap protection apply if I'm an AI Intern on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf and you're selected in the lottery before your STEM OPT EAD expires, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of the fiscal year the H-1B takes effect. You can continue your AI internship or any authorized OPT employment during this period without interruption, as long as the petition remains pending or approved.
Where can I find AI Intern roles open to STEM OPT students?
Browse Migrate Mate to find AI Intern postings from employers already enrolled in E-Verify. Filtering for STEM OPT-eligible roles saves time compared to manually confirming E-Verify status for each company. You can also cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile for AI and machine learning roles to understand which job titles and SOC codes align with your degree for training plan purposes.
