Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Asset Protection Specialist
Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's CIP code matching the STEM-designated list. Criminal justice technology, data analytics, and information systems degrees commonly qualify. Confirm your program's code with your DSO before targeting roles.
Filter for E-Verify enrolled employers only
Every STEM OPT employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, and asset protection roles at retailers, logistics firms, and financial institutions vary widely in compliance status. Search Migrate Mate to find Asset Protection Specialist openings already filtered for E-Verify enrollment.
Target industries with structured onboarding timelines
Retail chains, healthcare systems, and financial institutions run formal asset protection hiring cycles tied to fiscal quarters. Applying in late Q3 or early Q4 aligns your start date with budget cycles, reducing the gap between offer and I-983 submission.
Draft your I-983 training plan before the offer stage
USCIS requires a signed I-983 connecting your daily duties to your STEM degree's learning objectives. Prepare a draft that maps loss prevention analytics, risk assessment, or inventory control responsibilities to specific technical skills from your coursework before negotiating your offer.
Check the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
If your employer later files an H-1B visa or other status change, wage compliance becomes critical. Run the SOC code for Asset Protection Specialist through OFLC Wage Search to confirm the local prevailing wage aligns with your offered compensation before signing.
Clarify the cap-gap window with your hiring manager
If your OPT expires while an H-1B petition is pending for October 1, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your work authorization. Confirm your employer understands this USCIS provision so employment doesn't lapse during the transition period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Asset Protection Specialist role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on how the role is structured and which degree you hold. Asset Protection Specialist positions that involve data analytics, security systems, or technology-driven loss prevention can qualify when tied to a STEM-designated degree in fields like information systems, data science, or criminal justice technology. Your DSO must confirm that the role's responsibilities directly apply your STEM training before approving the I-983.
How do I know if an employer is enrolled in E-Verify for this role?
E-Verify enrollment is mandatory for all STEM OPT employers, but not every asset protection employer is enrolled. You can ask the recruiter or HR contact directly, or use Migrate Mate to browse Asset Protection Specialist openings that are already filtered for E-Verify compliance. Do not assume large retailers or national employers are automatically enrolled without confirming.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an Asset Protection Specialist?
The I-983 must show a direct connection between your STEM degree's learning objectives and your day-to-day responsibilities. For asset protection roles, this typically means documenting how you use data analysis, risk modeling, security technology, or statistical reporting in your work. Your employer's supervisor signs the form, and your DSO must approve it before your STEM OPT extension begins.
What happens to my work authorization if my OPT ends while an H-1B is pending?
If your employer files an H-1B cap-subject petition before your OPT expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization through September 30 or until the petition is adjudicated, whichever comes first. You can continue working as an Asset Protection Specialist during this period as long as your EAD and the cap-gap extension together cover the gap.
Which STEM degrees most commonly support Asset Protection Specialist roles?
Degrees in information systems, data analytics, supply chain management, and criminal justice technology are most frequently matched to asset protection positions because the work involves loss prevention data, inventory tracking systems, and security technology. Check O*NET for the occupation's knowledge and skill requirements, then compare those to your degree's CIP code to assess fit before your DSO reviews the I-983.
