Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code is on the STEM OPT designated degree program list maintained by USCIS. IT-adjacent degrees like Management Information Systems or Computer Engineering Technology qualify, but Business Information Systems often does not, so confirm with your DSO before targeting roles.
Target employers already enrolled in E-Verify
Before accepting any IT Support offer, confirm the employer is actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. Ask HR for their E-Verify company ID or verify enrollment directly through the E-Verify portal, since lapsed enrollment disqualifies them as a STEM OPT sponsor.
Frame your I-983 training goals around measurable IT skills
Your training plan must connect your daily IT Support duties to specific STEM learning objectives. List concrete goals like Active Directory administration, network troubleshooting protocols, or ticketing system proficiency rather than vague descriptions so USCIS has clear evidence of a formal training relationship.
Use Migrate Mate to filter IT Support roles by E-Verify enrollment
Manually checking E-Verify status for every employer wastes time in a compressed OPT timeline. Migrate Mate surfaces IT Support Technician listings filtered to E-Verify-enrolled employers, so you're only engaging with companies that can legally sign your I-983 and support your extension.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
IT Support Technician wage levels vary by metro area and experience tier. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to see DOL's prevailing wage for your role so you can negotiate from an informed baseline and confirm the offer meets H-1B visa transition thresholds if that's your long-term path.
File your STEM OPT extension at the 90-day window
You can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension up to 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Filing late means a gap in work authorization, which IT employers treat as a compliance risk. Submit I-765 to USCIS with your signed I-983 and updated I-20 well before that deadline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Support Technician role qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. The role itself must relate to a STEM-designated CIP code field listed by USCIS, such as computer science, information systems, or electrical engineering technology. Your DSO confirms eligibility by updating your I-20 with the correct CIP code. If your degree is in a borderline field like applied technology, verify the CIP code designation before accepting an offer.
What does my IT Support employer need to do for STEM OPT?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, sign the I-983 training plan with you, and provide supervision that connects your daily duties to your STEM degree field. They also commit to reporting material changes in your employment to your DSO within five business days. Employers unfamiliar with STEM OPT sometimes hesitate at the I-983, so walking HR through the one-page form early in the offer process prevents last-minute delays.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an IT Support role?
The I-983 must list specific, measurable learning objectives tied to your degree. For IT Support Technician positions, that means goals like diagnosing hardware and software failures using systematic methodologies, configuring network infrastructure, or managing user authentication systems. Generic language like 'gaining work experience' doesn't satisfy USCIS review. Include the tools, platforms, and protocols you'll work with so the training connection to your STEM field is explicit.
How does cap-gap affect me if my H-1B is selected while I'm working as an IT Support Technician?
If your H-1B petition is filed before your OPT or STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as an IT Support Technician under cap-gap without any interruption, provided your employer filed the petition before your EAD expired. Confirm the filing date with HR and keep a copy of the receipt notice on hand.
Where can I find IT Support Technician jobs that sponsor STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists IT Support Technician roles filtered to employers enrolled in E-Verify, which is the baseline requirement for STEM OPT eligibility. Searching there saves you from spending time on applications to companies that can't legally support your extension. You can also cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile for IT Support Technician to identify related job titles that fall under the same SOC code and may surface additional qualifying opportunities.
