Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, computer engineering, and information systems degrees typically qualify, but exact program names vary by institution.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before you reach the offer stage. A company can want to hire you and still be unable to legally employ you on STEM OPT if they haven't completed E-Verify enrollment.
Build your I-983 training plan around cloud infrastructure deliverables
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your degree. For this role, frame objectives around infrastructure-as-code, cloud architecture design, or reliability engineering rather than generic software skills.
Target employers with active PERM and H-1B filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer roles by employers with documented DOL Labor Condition Application filings. Active LCA filings signal that a company already understands and supports work authorization for STEM hires.
Use O*NET to anchor your specialty occupation case
The O*NET occupation profile for cloud infrastructure and network systems roles lists the degree requirements employers typically cite when filing LCAs. Reference these requirements when your offer letter's job description is vague about educational prerequisites.
Time your STEM OPT application to protect cap-gap eligibility
If your employer plans to file an H-1B visa petition for you, file your STEM OPT extension with USCIS at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. A timely filing preserves your cap-gap protection if your H-1B visa is selected in the lottery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, provided your degree falls under an eligible STEM CIP code such as computer science, computer engineering, or information systems. The role itself must also constitute a STEM-related practical training opportunity directly related to your degree. Your DSO will confirm CIP code eligibility when you request the STEM OPT recommendation on your I-20.
How do I find Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer employers enrolled in E-Verify?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and active DOL Labor Condition Application filings, so you can focus your search on companies already set up to hire STEM OPT students. You can also ask a recruiter directly or check a company's public E-Verify employer profile before investing time in their process.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for a cloud infrastructure role?
Your I-983 must detail specific learning objectives that connect your day-to-day responsibilities to your STEM degree. For a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, that means documenting goals around distributed systems design, infrastructure automation, or cloud reliability engineering rather than generic job duties. Your employer's supervisor signs off on the plan, and your DSO must approve it before your extension is authorized.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before April 1 and your STEM OPT EAD is still valid at that point, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year if your petition is selected. USCIS does not issue a separate document for cap-gap; your valid EAD plus a timely, properly filed petition together constitute your authorization.
Can I switch employers during my STEM OPT extension as a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer?
Yes, but the new employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify, and you must report the employer change to your DSO within ten days. Your DSO will update your SEVIS record and issue a new I-983 training plan reflecting the new employer's cloud infrastructure work. A lapse in reporting can jeopardize your STEM OPT status even if both companies are otherwise compliant.
