Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Network Administrator
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list. Computer science, information technology, and computer engineering codes all qualify, but network-adjacent business degrees sometimes don't. Confirm with your DSO before targeting STEM OPT roles.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
Search the E-Verify employer search tool to confirm enrollment before you apply. Network Administrator postings at staffing firms or small IT shops often lack E-Verify enrollment, which disqualifies them from sponsoring your STEM OPT extension entirely.
Build your I-983 training plan around NOC responsibilities
Your I-983 must tie each learning objective directly to your day-to-day Network Administrator duties, such as configuring routers, managing VLANs, or monitoring network security. Generic plans get rejected. Draft role-specific objectives using your job description before your first day.
Target employers with active IT infrastructure teams
Use Migrate Mate to find Network Administrator openings at employers whose E-Verify enrollment is already confirmed. Filtering by employer type early cuts wasted applications and surfaces companies experienced with STEM OPT training plan requirements for technical IT roles.
Apply at least 90 days before your OPT expires
USCIS recommends submitting your STEM OPT extension application up to 90 days before your initial OPT end date. Filing within that window extends your work authorization automatically while the application is pending, preventing any gap in your ability to work.
Use OFLC Wage Search to validate your offer
Before accepting a Network Administrator offer, look up the prevailing wage for your job title and location using the OFLC Wage Search. Your employer's I-983 must show compensation commensurate with similarly situated U.S. workers, and USCIS will scrutinize wages below that threshold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Network Administrator role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your underlying degree carries an eligible CIP code from the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list. Computer science, information technology, computer engineering, and related STEM fields all qualify. The role itself must also provide practical training directly related to your degree field. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before filing the extension.
What E-Verify requirement applies to STEM OPT employers?
Any employer who wants to sponsor your STEM OPT extension must be enrolled in E-Verify at the specific worksite where you'll be employed. Enrollment at a parent company's headquarters doesn't automatically cover a subsidiary or satellite office. You can confirm enrollment using the E-Verify employer search tool before you accept an offer. Working for a non-enrolled employer voids your extension eligibility.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Network Administrator position?
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your Network Administrator duties, the skills you'll develop, how your employer will supervise your training, and how the work connects to your STEM degree. Both you and your employer must sign it. USCIS requires that each goal be measurable and role-specific, not a copy of your job description. Your DSO submits it in SEVIS once complete.
How does cap-gap protection work if I'm transitioning from STEM OPT to H-1B?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT end date and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as a Network Administrator without interruption. USCIS issues an updated I-20 reflecting the cap-gap period, which serves as your employment authorization evidence.
Where can I find Network Administrator jobs at E-Verify enrolled employers?
Migrate Mate lists Network Administrator openings filtered for employers who meet STEM OPT requirements, including E-Verify enrollment. You can browse roles by location, employer size, and network specialization. Using a platform designed for F-1 students saves time you'd otherwise spend vetting each employer's E-Verify status and STEM OPT experience individually.
