JOB OVERVIEW
We’re looking for a go-to problem solver who enjoys helping people and keeping technology running smoothly. As an IT Support Specialist, you’ll be the friendly face (or voice) of IT—jumping in to troubleshoot issues, maintain equipment, and support a wide range of systems across the organization.
This role is perfect for someone who likes variety, isn’t afraid to get hands-on, and takes pride in turning “something’s not working” into “you’re all set.”
HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR ROLE:
- Serve as a key member of the IT helpdesk—responding to support requests, troubleshooting issues, and keeping things moving for our users
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and connectivity issues across computers, printers, scanners, and other devices
- Help maintain and support network infrastructure, including cabling, phones/voicemail systems, and conferencing/AV setups
- Roll up your sleeves for hands-on work like installing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on equipment
- Research and test new tools or solutions that could improve the user experience or team efficiency
- Support and guide end-users—whether it’s fixing an issue or helping them feel more confident using technology
- Create and update documentation so knowledge is shared and the team stays aligned
- Pitch in on projects and ideas that improve systems, reduce costs, or streamline how we work
- Participate in an on-call rotation with the team to help support critical needs
YOU'RE A GOOD FIT IF YOU HAVE (OR IF YOU CAN):
- Associate degree in IT, networking, or a related field—or equivalent hands-on experience
- Solid understanding of Windows-based systems; familiarity with Active Directory, Entra or InTune is a plus
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and general end-user support
- Basic understanding of networking concepts (you don’t need to be a network engineer, but you’re comfortable troubleshooting)
- A problem-solving mindset and willingness to dig in and figure things out
- Strong communication skills—you can explain technical issues in a way that makes sense to non-technical users
- Comfort working both independently and as part of a team
ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE:
- This role may involve accessing equipment in ceilings or elevated spaces—training on scissor/boom lifts will be provided (or required)
- You’ll get exposure to a wide range of technologies, so it’s a great opportunity to grow your skills over time

Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to an approved STEM field in the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. IT Support roles supported by computer science or information systems degrees typically qualify, but management information systems and similar hybrid programs have been questioned at adjudication.
Screen employers for E-Verify enrollment early
Ask recruiters whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before your first interview, not after an offer. Many smaller IT Support employers, including managed service providers, aren't enrolled and can't legally onboard STEM OPT students without completing enrollment first.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable IT goals
Your Form I-983 must connect your daily IT Support tasks to specific learning outcomes tied to your STEM degree. Vague descriptions like 'resolving tickets' get rejected by DSOs. Tie duties to concrete skills: network diagnostics, systems administration, or cybersecurity incident response.
Target IT departments at E-Verify-enrolled companies on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter IT Support roles at employers already enrolled in E-Verify. Applying through channels that surface E-Verify status upfront cuts the back-and-forth with HR and shortens your time to an I-983-ready offer.
Use OFLC Wage Search to negotiate from a documented baseline
Pull the prevailing wage for your SOC code and metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting any IT Support offer. STEM OPT doesn't have a wage floor requirement, but your I-983 must show the position is a bona fide training opportunity, and a wage well below prevailing levels raises DSO concerns.
File your STEM OPT extension application 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS requires you to file at least 90 days before your initial OPT end date to maintain work authorization continuity. If your I-765 is pending when OPT expires, your 180-day cap-gap protection covers you only if you've already filed on time and remain in valid F-1 status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Support role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
IT Support positions qualify when your employer can document that the role requires applying knowledge from your STEM degree. The position's SOC code matters: roles classified under Computer User Support Specialists or Network Support Specialists typically align with computer science and IT degree programs on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Your DSO reviews both your degree's CIP code and the job duties on your I-983 before recommending the extension.
What happens if my employer isn't enrolled in E-Verify?
You can't work on STEM OPT at an employer that isn't enrolled in E-Verify, full stop. If you receive an offer and the employer isn't enrolled, they must complete E-Verify enrollment before you start. This process typically takes a few days to a few weeks depending on how quickly the employer acts. Confirm enrollment status before signing an offer letter to avoid gaps in your authorization.
How do I write an I-983 training plan for an IT Support position?
Your Form I-983 must describe specific tasks that connect your daily IT Support work to your STEM degree curriculum. List concrete activities like configuring network hardware, performing systems analysis, or supporting cybersecurity protocols, then map each to a learning objective. Generic language like 'helping users with technology problems' won't satisfy your DSO or USCIS. Your employer's supervisor must co-sign the plan and attest that the role is a genuine training opportunity.
How do I find IT Support employers who accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters IT Support roles by employers enrolled in E-Verify and with a history of hiring international students, so you're not applying blind. Many smaller IT Support shops and managed service providers haven't navigated STEM OPT before, which means even a willing employer can create delays. Focusing on employers with prior experience significantly reduces the back-and-forth over documentation requirements.
Does the cap-gap rule protect me if my H-1B is selected but my OPT expires first?
Yes, cap-gap protection extends your OPT work authorization from your OPT expiration date through September 30 of the fiscal year your H-1B visa petition is filed for, as long as you have a timely filed, non-frivolous H-1B petition and remain in valid F-1 status. Your employer must still be enrolled in E-Verify during the cap-gap period. Check your I-20 and EAD carefully, and confirm with your DSO that your STEM OPT extension was properly authorized before the cap-gap kicks in.
