Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to a DHS-designated STEM field. Computer science and information systems degrees typically qualify, but your DSO confirms the match on your updated I-20.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before advancing to final-round interviews. Cloud teams at large enterprises are almost always enrolled, but mid-size consultancies and startups frequently are not.
Target cloud-heavy roles with dedicated infrastructure teams
Cloud Architect openings at companies running multi-cloud or hybrid environments involve specialized AWS, Azure, or GCP architecture work that satisfies the STEM OPT training plan's requirement for a direct connection between your degree and daily job duties.
Document your training plan around architecture deliverables
Your I-983 must tie specific job tasks to your STEM degree's learning objectives. List cloud design deliverables, migration projects, and infrastructure reviews as concrete training goals your employer signs off on every six months.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified E-Verify employers
Search Cloud Architect roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment and DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, so you're only applying to companies that can legally employ STEM OPT workers from day one.
Plan your H-1B cap-gap timeline during offer negotiations
If your STEM OPT end date falls between April 1 and October 1, cap-gap rules extend your authorization automatically once USCIS receives your H-1B visa petition. Factor this into your start-date conversation so your employer files before your OPT expires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cloud Architect role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes. Cloud Architect positions are classified under computer and information systems occupations in O*NET, which fall within DHS-designated STEM fields. Your degree in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline must align with the role. Your DSO verifies this alignment on your updated I-20 before authorizing the 24-month extension.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify for me to work as a Cloud Architect on STEM OPT?
Yes, E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement. Any employer hiring you under the STEM OPT extension must be actively enrolled in E-Verify at the time you begin work. This applies to the specific site location where you'll be working, not just the parent company. Confirm enrollment status with your recruiter before signing an offer letter, and verify it independently through the E-Verify employer search tool.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Cloud Architect position?
Your I-983 must describe how your daily Cloud Architect duties connect to the STEM knowledge from your degree. Include specific deliverables like designing multi-cloud architecture diagrams, leading infrastructure migration projects, or implementing security frameworks. Both you and your employer sign the plan, and your employer must submit an updated evaluation every 12 months. Vague job descriptions without degree-specific learning objectives are a common reason DSOs push back on I-983 approvals.
How does cap-gap protection work if my STEM OPT ends during H-1B season?
If your STEM OPT authorization expires between April 1 and September 30, and USCIS has received a timely H-1B cap-subject petition filed on your behalf, cap-gap rules extend your work authorization automatically through September 30. You can continue working as a Cloud Architect without interruption during this period. USCIS updates cap-gap guidance each fiscal year, so confirm the current rules apply to your situation before relying on this extension.
Where can I find Cloud Architect jobs that are open to STEM OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate lists Cloud Architect roles filtered for employers with E-Verify enrollment and active DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, which removes the guesswork of identifying who can legally hire STEM OPT workers. Standard job boards don't surface E-Verify status, so you can spend weeks applying to companies that turn you down at the offer stage simply because they aren't enrolled.
