Verify your CIP code maps correctly
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code matching a DHS-approved STEM field. Computer science, electrical engineering, and information systems codes all support Data Platform Engineer roles, but applied mathematics or statistics degrees require your DSO to confirm the mapping before you file.
Check E-Verify enrollment before applying
Any employer who hires you on STEM OPT must be enrolled in E-Verify, not just willing to enroll. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name before your first interview so you're not discovering the gap after an offer is on the table.
Target companies with active LCA filings for data roles
Employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications through DOL for data engineering or cloud infrastructure positions already understand prevailing wage obligations and STEM work authorization logistics. Filtering by recent LCA activity for relevant SOC codes narrows your list to employers who've done this before.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified STEM OPT employers
Search Migrate Mate to find Data Platform Engineer roles at employers already screened for E-Verify enrollment. This saves you from applying to companies that can't legally hire you on OPT and focuses your effort on employers set up to support your training plan and extension filing.
Draft your I-983 training plan before the offer stage
USCIS requires a completed Form I-983 training plan signed by both you and your employer before your STEM OPT extension begins. Have a draft ready that maps your data platform responsibilities to your specific degree competencies so your employer can review and sign without delays holding up your start date.
Align your job title and duties with your degree on the I-983
USCIS scrutinizes whether your day-to-day work directly relates to your STEM field. For data platform roles, document specific technical responsibilities like pipeline architecture, query optimization, or distributed system design rather than generic descriptions. Vague job duties on the I-983 are a common reason extensions get flagged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Platform Engineer role qualify for STEM OPT?
Yes, Data Platform Engineer positions typically qualify because they require applied knowledge in computer science, information systems, or electrical engineering, all of which are DHS-approved STEM fields. Your degree's CIP code must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and your actual job duties must directly relate to that field. Your DSO confirms eligibility when recommending the extension on your I-20.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify at the time you begin working on the STEM OPT extension. Enrollment alone is not enough if the specific site or hiring entity within a larger company isn't covered. Confirm enrollment status directly with HR before accepting an offer, and verify that the entity listed on your I-983 matches the enrolled E-Verify employer.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a data engineering role?
The I-983 requires a detailed description of how your Data Platform Engineer responsibilities connect to your STEM degree. You'll document specific learning objectives, mentorship arrangements, and performance evaluation criteria. For this role, that typically includes skills in distributed data systems, ETL pipeline design, or cloud infrastructure. Both you and your supervisor must sign, and USCIS can audit the plan at any time during your extension.
How does cap-gap affect my STEM OPT timeline if I get H-1B selected?
If you file an H-1B visa petition before your OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. Your STEM OPT extension doesn't restart the cap-gap clock, but if your STEM OPT is still valid when the H-1B petition is filed, your authorized stay extends until the H-1B start date. Keep your EAD expiration date and petition receipt notice organized carefully.
Where can I find Data Platform Engineer jobs at E-Verify employers?
Migrate Mate lists Data Platform Engineer roles filtered for employers enrolled in E-Verify, which removes the guesswork of checking enrollment separately for each company. You can search by role type and see which employers have existing LCA filing history for data engineering positions, giving you a clearer picture of which companies already have infrastructure in place to support STEM OPT hires.
