Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to an approved STEM field in the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Civil Engineering (14.0801) and Construction Engineering (14.3201) both qualify, but interdisciplinary degrees need confirmation from your DSO.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment during screening
Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before accepting an offer. General contractors often hire through subsidiaries, so confirm the specific legal entity on your offer letter is the enrolled employer, not just the parent company.
Target firms with active federal contracts
Federal contractors are legally required to use E-Verify for all employees on covered contracts, making them reliable STEM OPT employers. Search DOL's System for Award Management records to identify construction firms with active federal project awards in your target metro.
Document field experience precisely in your I-983
Your I-983 training plan must show how on-site project engineering work directly applies concepts from your STEM degree. Link specific tasks like cost estimating, structural review, or schedule analysis to learning objectives tied to your civil or mechanical engineering coursework.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified employers
Search for Construction Project Engineer roles on Migrate Mate, which filters listings to E-Verify enrolled employers. You can identify companies with consistent STEM OPT hiring patterns before you spend time tailoring your resume and portfolio for a specific firm.
Time your OPT extension filing around project start dates
Submit your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Construction roles frequently have fixed project start dates, so early filing protects your ability to begin on a contracted schedule without authorization gaps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Project Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an approved STEM field such as civil, mechanical, or construction engineering. The role must also relate directly to your degree program, and your DSO must authorize the extension. USCIS requires you to be employed full-time with an E-Verify enrolled employer for the 24-month extension to remain valid.
Which STEM degrees make you eligible for STEM OPT in construction engineering jobs?
Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Structural Engineering degrees are all on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List and commonly support Construction Project Engineer roles. Environmental Engineering and Industrial Engineering degrees can also qualify depending on the specific job duties. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before applying, since interdisciplinary degrees vary by institution.
What does an employer need to do to hire a STEM OPT Construction Project Engineer?
The employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify and sign your I-983 training plan, which outlines how the role connects to your STEM degree. The hiring entity listed on your offer letter must be the same legal entity enrolled in E-Verify. General contractors who hire through project-specific subsidiaries should confirm enrollment at the subsidiary level before your start date.
How does cap-gap protection work if you're a STEM OPT Construction Project Engineer pursuing H-1B?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue in your Construction Project Engineer role without interruption. USCIS issues a cap-gap extension through the normal OPT EAD process, so no separate filing is required on your end.
Where can STEM OPT students find Construction Project Engineer jobs with E-Verify employers?
Migrate Mate lists Construction Project Engineer roles filtered to E-Verify enrolled employers, so you can focus your search on companies already set up to hire STEM OPT students. You can review employer hiring patterns and filter by location and role type. Applying through a platform built around work authorization requirements saves significant time compared to manually verifying E-Verify status for each employer.
