Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Product Safety Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List before you apply. Engineering technology, mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering codes commonly support Product Safety Engineer roles, but your specific program must be listed.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before your offer stage. An employer who isn't enrolled can't sponsor your STEM OPT extension, regardless of how well you fit the role or how willing they are to hire you.
File your I-983 training plan with precision
Your I-983 must describe concrete safety engineering tasks, not a generic job description. Name the specific standards you'll work with, such as IEC 62368-1 or ISO 13849, and ensure your DSO signs off before your initial OPT period expires.
Target industries with structured compliance functions
Consumer electronics, medical devices, and automotive manufacturers routinely run large safety engineering teams with established E-Verify enrollment and immigration infrastructure. These sectors file LCAs through DOL and typically have HR teams familiar with OPT documentation requirements.
Use Migrate Mate to find E-Verify enrolled employers
Search for Product Safety Engineer roles on Migrate Mate, which filters employers by E-Verify enrollment and DOL filing history. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that can't legally support your STEM OPT extension.
Understand cap-gap timing before your third year
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30. Plan your H-1B registration timing with your employer's HR team at least six months out.

Find Product Safety Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Safety Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your underlying degree falls under an eligible CIP code on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, industrial, and systems engineering commonly qualify. The role itself doesn't determine eligibility, your degree program does. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before applying for the extension on your I-765.
How do I find Product Safety Engineer employers enrolled in E-Verify?
You can verify E-Verify enrollment by asking the employer directly or by searching the E-Verify employer search tool. Migrate Mate surfaces Product Safety Engineer roles filtered by employers with active DOL filing history, making it faster to identify companies already set up to support STEM OPT students without cold-applying and waiting for HR to confirm enrollment status.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Product Safety Engineer?
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not a copy-paste of your job description. For Product Safety Engineer roles, this means naming the regulatory frameworks you'll apply, such as UL standards or CPSC regulations, the testing methodologies involved, and how each responsibility connects to your degree field. Both you and your employer's authorized representative must sign it, and your DSO must receive it before your extension begins.
Can I switch employers during my STEM OPT extension as a Product Safety Engineer?
Yes, but the new employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify, and you must file a new I-983 training plan with your DSO before starting work. USCIS requires you to report the employer change within ten days. If the new company isn't enrolled in E-Verify, you can't legally work there on your STEM OPT extension, even if your EAD card is still valid.
How does cap-gap protection apply if I'm on STEM OPT and my employer files an H-1B petition?
If your STEM OPT EAD expires between April 1 and September 30 and your employer filed a timely H-1B petition on your behalf that was accepted for processing, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. You don't need a new EAD during this period. USCIS publishes guidance on cap-gap eligibility, and your DSO can provide a cap-gap I-20 to document the extension for your employer's records.
