Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Electrical Project Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Electrical Engineering (CIP 14.1001) and Computer Engineering (CIP 14.0901) both qualify for STEM OPT, but your degree's exact CIP code determines eligibility. Confirm the code on your I-20 with your DSO before you start your job search.
Check E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify at the specific work site listed on your I-983. Search the E-Verify employer database by company name and location to confirm enrollment status before signing an offer letter.
Align your I-983 to project engineering scope
Your training plan must describe learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not just job duties. For Electrical Project Engineers, map goals to specific technical competencies: power systems design, NEC compliance review, or substation engineering, so USCIS sees a clear degree connection.
Target industries with high E-Verify penetration
Federal contractors are legally required to use E-Verify, making defense, utilities, and infrastructure firms reliable targets. Electrical Project Engineer roles at these employers are structurally more likely to support STEM OPT without needing to walk HR through the enrollment process.
Search Migrate Mate to filter by E-Verify employers
Migrate Mate surfaces Electrical Project Engineer jobs filtered to E-Verify-enrolled employers, saving you from applying to roles where the employer can't legally hire you on STEM OPT. Filter by role and work authorization type to build a qualified target list.
Time your extension filing to cap-gap protection
If you're pursuing H-1B after STEM OPT and your OPT EAD expires before October 1, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization. File your STEM OPT extension at least 90 days before your current EAD ends to avoid a gap that interrupts active project work.

Find Electrical Project Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Project Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline with a qualifying CIP code. The role itself must also provide practical training directly related to that degree. Your DSO confirms eligibility by verifying the CIP code on your I-20 before recommending the extension to USCIS.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an Electrical Project Engineer?
Your I-983 must describe learning objectives connected to your STEM degree, not just a list of job duties. For Electrical Project Engineers, that means detailing how the role develops competencies in areas like power distribution design, load flow analysis, or electrical code compliance. Both you and your employer's authorized representative must sign it, and your DSO must receive it before your extension is approved.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is required for every employer hiring a STEM OPT student. You can search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name and work site location to confirm active enrollment. Enrollment must cover the specific location where you'll work, so verify the exact office address, not just the parent company's headquarters status.
How do I find Electrical Project Engineer jobs that support STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters Electrical Project Engineer listings to employers enrolled in E-Verify, which is the baseline requirement for any STEM OPT placement. Federal contractors, utilities, and infrastructure firms tend to have E-Verify enrollment already in place. Targeting these sectors reduces the back-and-forth with HR and speeds up the authorization confirmation step.
What happens to my STEM OPT work authorization if I'm selected in the H-1B lottery?
If your STEM OPT EAD expires before October 1 and your H-1B petition is filed on time, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. You can continue working as an Electrical Project Engineer during that window without interruption. USCIS requires your employer to have filed a timely, valid H-1B cap-subject petition for cap-gap to apply.
