Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in DevOps
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, information systems, and software engineering codes all qualify, but information technology degrees vary by institution, so confirm with your DSO before targeting STEM OPT roles.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
Before submitting any application, confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify through the E-Verify employer search tool. DevOps contractors and staffing firms that place you at a client site must also be E-Verify enrolled, not just the end client.
Target companies with active cloud infrastructure hiring
DevOps roles at AWS, GCP, and Azure partner firms generate dense STEM OPT pipelines because their engineering teams already document training plans for cloud certifications. Use Migrate Mate to find employers who actively hire OPT students into DevOps and platform engineering roles.
Build your I-983 training plan around specific DevOps competencies
Your I-983 must list concrete learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not just your job duties. Map your training goals to skills like infrastructure-as-code, container orchestration, or observability tooling so the plan clearly connects your computer science background to the role.
Time your STEM OPT application to avoid a work authorization gap
File your STEM OPT extension with USCIS at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. DevOps hiring cycles often run four to eight weeks, so starting your job search with three months of buffer prevents a gap between your offer date and your extension approval.
Negotiate your offer letter to name the DevOps training structure
Ask the recruiter to include a brief description of your training curriculum and reporting structure in the offer letter before you sign. This language makes completing the I-983 employer section faster and reduces back-and-forth with HR once onboarding starts.

Find DevOps JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a DevOps engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
DevOps engineer positions typically qualify if your bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, computer engineering, or information systems. The role itself must use your STEM knowledge directly, meaning responsibilities like infrastructure automation, CI/CD pipeline development, and systems reliability are strong qualifiers. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your degree's CIP code, not your job title alone.
How do I confirm my DevOps employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
USCIS requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before you can begin working on a STEM OPT extension. You can search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name to check enrollment status. If your employer uses a staffing agency or professional employer organization to manage HR, that entity must also be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm this before accepting an offer, since you can't start the I-983 process with a non-enrolled employer.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a DevOps role?
The I-983 training plan requires your employer to document the practical training goals, skills you'll develop, and how the work relates to your STEM degree. For DevOps specifically, this means listing competencies like cloud infrastructure management, automated testing frameworks, container orchestration, or monitoring and alerting systems. Both you and a company official must sign the form before your DSO can submit your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your H-1B petition is filed for the October 1 start date and selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your OPT EAD and STEM OPT authorization through September 30 if it would otherwise expire during that period. You can continue working for your E-Verify-enrolled DevOps employer without interruption. USCIS issues cap-gap coverage automatically, but confirm your I-20 reflects the extension so your status remains valid.
How do I find DevOps employers who are already experienced with STEM OPT students?
Employers who have sponsored STEM OPT students before typically have established I-983 templates and HR processes, which shortens your onboarding paperwork significantly. Migrate Mate lists DevOps roles from employers who hire OPT students, so you can focus your search on companies already familiar with E-Verify enrollment and training plan requirements rather than spending time educating recruiters from scratch.
