Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by USCIS. Electrical Engineering (CIP 14.1001) qualifies, but Computer Engineering Technology degrees vary by institution and may require your DSO to confirm eligibility.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
Ask recruiters directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before any offer stage. Federal contractors are required to participate, so targeting defense, aerospace, and utility firms often surfaces E-Verify-enrolled employers faster than filtering general postings.
Translate your design tools into sponsor signals
Electrical design roles often require LCA filings under SOC code 17-2071. Highlighting proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or MATLAB in your resume helps employers match your profile to the exact occupation they filed wages for, reducing LCA amendment friction.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Electrical Design Engineer openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and DOL filing history for your target occupation. This cuts the research time of manually cross-referencing E-Verify records against open roles.
Get your I-983 training plan drafted early
Your employer signs Form I-983 before USCIS approves the STEM OPT extension. Bring a draft to your offer negotiation stage that maps your electrical design responsibilities to your degree's learning objectives, so HR isn't surprised by the requirement after you accept.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer files an LCA certifying your wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your location and role. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC 17-2071 in your target metro before finalizing your offer so you know the floor they're obligated to meet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Design Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline listed on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. The role itself must also constitute practical training directly related to your degree. Your DSO confirms CIP code eligibility before filing the STEM OPT extension with USCIS.
How do I confirm a company hiring Electrical Design Engineers is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT employers. You can ask the recruiter or HR contact directly, or check federal contractor status since those firms are mandated to enroll. If a company can't confirm enrollment before extending an offer, your STEM OPT extension can't be authorized there. Browse verified employers on Migrate Mate to shortcut this check.
What goes into the Form I-983 training plan for an Electrical Design Engineer?
The I-983 requires your employer to describe the specific training activities, the supervision structure, and how each task connects to your STEM degree's learning objectives. For electrical design roles, this typically means mapping circuit design, power analysis, or CAD work to coursework in your degree program. Both you and a company official sign the form before your extension is filed.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my Electrical Design Engineer employer terminates my position?
USCIS allows a 60-day grace period after your employment ends during the STEM OPT period. You must report the termination to your DSO promptly. If you find a new E-Verify-enrolled employer within that window, your DSO can update your SEVIS record and you can continue under STEM OPT. Exceeding the 60-day limit puts your status at risk.
Does my STEM OPT extension count toward cap-gap if my employer files an H-1B petition?
Yes. If your employer files an H-1B visa petition before your OPT or STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. Your STEM OPT EAD doesn't need to be renewed separately during cap-gap. USCIS guidance confirms this extension is automatic once the petition is filed.
