Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your STEM degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Field Engineer roles often require electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering credentials, and a mismatched CIP code will disqualify your extension request.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your recruiter or HR contact to confirm active E-Verify enrollment before you sign anything. Employers in field operations or project contracting sometimes subcontract work, so verify that the entity on your I-983 is the E-Verify participant, not just the prime contractor.
Target employers with active field project pipelines
Field Engineer roles are project-driven, so your 24-month extension is strongest with employers running multi-year infrastructure or energy contracts. Search Migrate Mate to filter for companies with verified STEM OPT hiring history in engineering and technical field roles.
Structure your I-983 training plan around field competencies
Your I-983 must connect your STEM degree to specific field engineering tasks like site inspection, systems commissioning, or technical troubleshooting. Generic job descriptions get flagged by DSOs. List measurable learning objectives tied to your degree program's outcomes.
Understand cap-gap coverage for H-1B transition
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your OPT expires, cap-gap rules under USCIS extend your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue field assignments uninterrupted as long as the petition is timely filed.
Use OFLC Wage Search to validate your offer
Field Engineer prevailing wages vary by geographic area and experience level. Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before your first interview so you can negotiate from an informed baseline and flag any offer that falls below the DOL wage level for your region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an approved STEM field such as electrical, civil, mechanical, or computer engineering and your CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. The role itself must also apply your STEM knowledge directly. Field positions in infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, and systems integration typically meet this requirement, but your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific degree and job description.
How do I confirm my Field Engineer employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask your HR contact to confirm E-Verify enrollment status directly, or request your company's E-Verify employer ID number. For field roles where you may be deployed to client sites through a staffing or contracting arrangement, confirm that the legal entity signing your I-983 training plan, not just the end client, holds active E-Verify enrollment. USCIS requires enrollment with the authorizing employer, not the site host.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a Field Engineer position?
Your I-983 must document how your daily field engineering tasks directly relate to your STEM degree. Include specific learning objectives such as applying electrical system diagnostics, interpreting civil engineering drawings, or commissioning mechanical systems. Generic descriptions like 'perform engineering duties' are insufficient. Your supervisor signs the plan and must attest that the role provides practical training aligned with your academic program. Your DSO reviews and approves it before USCIS processes your EAD extension.
Can I work on client sites or travel for field assignments during STEM OPT?
Yes. STEM OPT does not restrict you to a single work location, but your authorized employer, meaning the E-Verify-enrolled entity on your I-983, must remain your legal employer of record throughout all field assignments. If you're deployed to a client site through a staffing arrangement, the staffing firm rather than the client must hold E-Verify enrollment and be named on your training plan. Update your DSO if your work location changes significantly.
Where can I find Field Engineer jobs that support STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists Field Engineer openings specifically filtered for employers who hire STEM OPT students and are enrolled in E-Verify. You can search by industry, location, and engineering discipline to find roles in infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, and related sectors. Filtering for STEM OPT compatibility at the search stage saves significant time compared to discovering E-Verify gaps late in the offer process.
