INTRODUCTION
A problem isn’t truly solved until it’s solved for all. That’s why Googlers build products that help create opportunities for everyone, whether down the street or across the globe. As a Program Manager at Google, you’ll lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from start to finish — working with stakeholders to plan requirements, manage project schedules, identify risks, and communicate clearly with cross-functional partners across the company. Your projects will often span offices, time zones, and hemispheres. It's your job to coordinate the players and keep them up to date on progress and deadlines.
As an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Program Manager, you will be a key contributor to continuous improvement across Google's EHS operations. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams within Google data center departments and contractors to identify and address EHS concerns, risk identification and mitigation. You will ensure the safety of the operations workforce, protection of the environment, and Google’s business. You will provide support with the implementation of new and critical EHS initiatives.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 2 years of experience in program or project management.
- Experience with environmental regulations, safety, and health protection in an industrial environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Credentials or certifications from Board of Certified Safety Professionals, NEBOSH or equivalent agencies.
- Master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 2 years of experience managing cross-functional or cross-team projects.
- Experience communicating with AHJ’s (e.g., federal, state, and local authorities) for notifications and permit conformance.
- Experience in data centers or electrical safety.
- Ability to advise, coach, influence, and collaborate with employees to achieve positive EHS outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Lead the full lifecycle of EHS programs, which may extend beyond your immediate team, driving impactful operational and technical improvements.
- Anticipate issues, propose solutions, and identify needs to develop or improve EHS Operations (Ops) tools/processes. Evaluate incident data and track corrective actions.
- Evaluate EHS impact during data center design reviews, equipment, and process changes. Perform EHS risk evaluations and define process controls for new processes.
- Ensure comprehensive Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) compliance, manage permits/Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Provide site ownership and drive EHS turn-up of new locations with little supervision, demonstrating complete campus EHS ownership.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, managing dependencies. Own site-based EHS decision-making and serve as a recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) in multiple EHS verticals.

Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM OPT designated degree list. EHS roles draw from multiple STEM fields, so environmental science, occupational health, and engineering degrees can all qualify depending on your specific program.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask HR directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before you sign anything. EHS roles appear at employers ranging from construction firms to universities, and E-Verify status varies widely across these sectors.
Target industries with high EHS compliance demand
Manufacturing, chemical production, oil and gas, and large hospital systems operate under strict OSHA and EPA mandates, making EHS hiring consistent and sponsorship infrastructure more established than in smaller firms.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified EHS employers
Filter EHS job listings on Migrate Mate to surface employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment. This saves you from applying to roles where you'd need to verify compliance status manually before every interview.
Align your I-983 training plan to OSHA competencies
Your I-983 must connect your EHS work to your STEM degree's learning outcomes. Frame duties around risk assessment methodologies, industrial hygiene measurements, or regulatory compliance analysis to satisfy DSO and USCIS review.
Reference the O*NET profile during offer negotiations
The O*NET occupation profile for Environmental Health and Safety Specialists outlines core tasks and knowledge requirements. Use it to confirm your offer letter duties align with the role's STEM-qualifying occupational definition before your DSO submits the extension.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Environmental Health and Safety role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your underlying degree is in an eligible STEM field such as environmental science, chemical engineering, occupational health, or a related discipline listed on the DHS STEM designated degree program list. The job itself doesn't need to be classified as STEM; your degree must carry a qualifying CIP code. Confirm your specific CIP code with your DSO before applying for the extension.
How do I find EHS employers who are enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search for EHS positions on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by E-Verify enrollment so you aren't guessing about employer eligibility. You can also ask HR departments directly or check E-Verify's public employer search. Enrollment is required before your employer can sign your I-983 training plan, so confirming it early avoids delays after you receive an offer.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an EHS position?
Your I-983 must describe how your EHS duties directly relate to your STEM degree's learning objectives. For EHS roles, this typically means documenting tasks like conducting hazard assessments, analyzing industrial hygiene data, developing safety management systems, or ensuring regulatory compliance. Generic job descriptions aren't sufficient; USCIS and your DSO look for a clear connection between your academic training and day-to-day responsibilities.
Does the STEM OPT cap-gap rule apply if my employer sponsors me for H-1B while I'm in an EHS role?
Yes. If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working in your EHS role during this period without interruption, as long as you remain with the same employer and your status is otherwise maintained.
Can I work for a government agency or nonprofit in an EHS role on STEM OPT?
Yes, but only if that agency or nonprofit is enrolled in E-Verify. Federal agencies are generally required to use E-Verify, but many state agencies, municipalities, and nonprofits are not automatically enrolled. Verify enrollment before accepting any offer. Some federal contractors in EHS fields are also required to participate in E-Verify under federal acquisition regulations, which can work in your favor when targeting those employers.
