Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Medical Physicist
Verify your CIP code before applying
Medical Physics programs can be coded under Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or Health Physics in O*NET, and not every coding maps cleanly to STEM OPT eligibility. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before your OPT end date to avoid extension delays.
Target hospital systems with ABR residency programs
Clinical medical physics positions in radiation oncology and diagnostic imaging almost always require or lead to ABR board certification. Hospital systems that run accredited residency programs are structurally set up for multi-year employment timelines, making them more likely to be E-Verify enrolled and H-1B aware.
Check E-Verify enrollment before your on-site interview
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before your extension begins. Search the E-Verify employer database by hospital or clinic name before accepting an offer, not after, so you can raise enrollment as a condition if needed.
File your I-983 training plan before your OPT start date
Your employer must sign a formal I-983 training plan outlining how your Medical Physicist role provides practical training directly related to your STEM degree. Get this document drafted and countersigned before your first day, since USCIS requires it to be in place at the extension start.
Use Migrate Mate to filter by E-Verify enrolled employers
Searching broadly for Medical Physicist openings wastes time when many smaller outpatient clinics aren't E-Verify enrolled. Migrate Mate filters roles by E-Verify status and LCA filing history, so you see only employers already structured to hire on STEM OPT.
Request your prevailing wage level before negotiating your offer
DOL's OFLC Wage Search shows the prevailing wage for Medical Physicists by geographic area and experience level. Knowing your wage level before your employer files the LCA lets you push back if the offered salary is below the DOL threshold, which can later cause H-1B complications.

Find Medical Physicist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does my medical physics degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension?
Most medical physics, health physics, and applied physics graduate degrees qualify, but eligibility depends on your program's CIP code, not just the degree title. Biomedical engineering degrees from accredited programs also commonly qualify. Your DSO can confirm whether your specific program's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by ICE. If it does, you're eligible to apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension through USCIS.
Does my employer need to be E-Verify enrolled for my STEM OPT extension to be valid?
Yes, E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT, not a formality. Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify before your extension period begins, and they must verify your employment eligibility through the system. Hospitals affiliated with large health systems are often already enrolled, but independent outpatient clinics or private practices may not be. Confirm enrollment status before signing your offer letter.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Medical Physicist role?
The I-983 must document how your specific Medical Physicist duties, such as treatment planning, dosimetry, quality assurance, or radiation safety, provide practical training directly related to your STEM degree. Your employer's physics or radiation oncology department head typically signs the training plan. The form also requires learning objectives tied to your role and a commitment to report material changes in your employment to your DSO within five business days.
Can I stay on STEM OPT while waiting for my H-1B cap decision?
If you're selected in the H-1B lottery and your employer files your petition before your STEM OPT expires, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of the fiscal year. Medical Physicist roles at hospitals, universities, and research centers typically qualify as specialty occupation positions for H-1B purposes, since the role requires a graduate-level physics or medical physics degree. Your STEM OPT EAD remains valid during the cap-gap period even if it expires.
How do I find Medical Physicist jobs where employers are already set up to hire on STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters Medical Physicist openings by E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history, so you can see which employers have already navigated STEM work authorization before. This matters because clinical physics departments at smaller cancer centers or freestanding imaging facilities often haven't hired on OPT before, and onboarding your employer to E-Verify mid-offer can cause start-date delays that affect your OPT timeline.
