Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Clinical Informatics Analyst
Verify your CIP code before applying
Health informatics, biomedical informatics, and computer science degrees typically carry STEM-designated CIP codes, but confirm yours with your DSO before targeting roles. A mismatched CIP code can disqualify you from the 24-month extension even if your job duties are technical.
Screen employers for E-Verify enrollment early
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before your extension is approved. Ask recruiters directly during the first conversation, or cross-check the employer's status through the E-Verify employer search before investing time in their interview process.
Align your I-983 training plan to EHR and analytics duties
Clinical Informatics Analyst roles involve EHR implementation, clinical data analysis, and interoperability work. Your I-983 must document specific learning objectives tied to those technical functions, not generic IT tasks. Vague training plans are the most common reason USCIS requests additional documentation.
Target health systems with dedicated informatics departments
Large academic medical centers and integrated health systems run structured clinical informatics teams, which means your role will map cleanly to a STEM occupation code. Informatics positions embedded inside general IT departments are harder to classify correctly on the I-983 and LCA.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with STEM OPT hiring history
Search Migrate Mate to identify health systems and healthcare IT companies that have actively hired STEM OPT students in informatics roles. Filtering by E-Verify enrollment saves time and surfaces employers already familiar with the training plan and reporting requirements.
Confirm prevailing wage compliance before accepting an offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your job title and zip code through the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Underpayment is a compliance violation that can jeopardize your extension, and catching it early gives you room to negotiate.

Find Clinical Informatics Analyst JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Informatics Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your underlying degree is in a STEM-designated field such as health informatics, biomedical informatics, computer science, or information systems. The role itself must also align with your degree's field of study. Your DSO will confirm whether your CIP code qualifies and authorize the extension on your I-20 before you file with USCIS.
What does the I-983 training plan need to cover for this role?
Your I-983 must describe concrete learning objectives tied to the technical functions of a Clinical Informatics Analyst, such as EHR system implementation, clinical data analysis, interoperability standards like HL7 or FHIR, or quality reporting workflows. Generic descriptions like 'support IT projects' are insufficient. Your supervisor signs the plan and must submit progress evaluations every six months for the duration of your STEM OPT extension.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask the recruiter or HR contact directly during the offer stage. You can also search the E-Verify employer search tool, which lists enrolled employers by name and location. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT authorization. An employer that is not enrolled cannot legally support your 24-month extension, regardless of how well the role fits your degree.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my employer changes ownership or is acquired?
If your employer is acquired or merges with another entity, you need to verify that the new employer entity is enrolled in E-Verify and that your employment relationship and training plan remain materially unchanged. If the new entity is not enrolled, you have a limited window to secure a compliant employer or file a change. Notify your DSO immediately when any ownership change occurs.
How do I find Clinical Informatics Analyst jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Search Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and a track record of hiring international students in technical healthcare roles. Targeting employers who have navigated STEM OPT before reduces onboarding friction, since HR teams already understand the I-983 process, the six-month reporting cycle, and the E-Verify verification step required at hire.
