Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Health Information Technology
Verify your CIP code before applying
Health Informatics and Health Information Technology programs fall under CIP codes 51.0706 and 11.0501, among others. Confirm your specific degree CIP code with your DSO before targeting roles, since not all health-related degrees automatically qualify for the STEM OPT extension.
Check E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension is approved. Search the E-Verify employer search tool or ask HR directly during the offer stage, not after signing, to avoid filing delays that could interrupt your work authorization.
Target hospitals with dedicated HIT departments
Health systems with in-house EHR implementation teams, such as academic medical centers and large integrated networks, run ongoing HIT projects that require qualified staff. These employers file I-983 training plans routinely and understand structured training obligations better than smaller clinical practices.
Align your I-983 training goals to O*NET competencies
Use the O*NET occupation profile for Medical Records Specialists and Health Informatics professionals to identify core competencies. Map those directly to your I-983 learning objectives so your training plan reflects recognized industry skills and satisfies USCIS evaluation standards.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for E-Verify employers
Searching manually for HIT employers enrolled in E-Verify is time-consuming. Migrate Mate filters jobs by verified employer enrollment status, so you only see roles where your STEM OPT extension is actually eligible without cross-referencing every posting yourself.
Negotiate your start date around DSO processing time
Your DSO must update your SEVIS record and issue a new I-20 before USCIS can approve the STEM OPT extension. Build at least 90 days of lead time into your offer negotiation so your authorization is active before your initial OPT period expires.

Find Health Information Technology JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Health Information Technology degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on the specific CIP code assigned to your degree program. Programs classified under CIP codes like 51.0706 (Health Information and Medical Records Technology) or 11.0501 (Computer and Information Sciences) typically qualify. Confirm your exact CIP code with your DSO before applying, since two programs with similar names can carry different codes and only one may be eligible.
What does an employer need to do to support my STEM OPT extension in a Health IT role?
The employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and co-sign the I-983 Training Plan for STEM OPT Students with you. The I-983 outlines your learning goals, supervisory structure, and how the role relates to your STEM degree. The employer also submits formal evaluations every six months and must notify your DSO within five business days if your employment ends or changes materially.
Can I work as an EHR implementation specialist or clinical data analyst on STEM OPT?
Yes, provided the role directly applies your STEM degree field. Positions involving EHR configuration, clinical data management, health informatics analysis, or interoperability engineering align well with qualifying STEM degree fields. Your I-983 training plan must document the connection between your specific job duties and your degree program to satisfy USCIS requirements.
How does cap-gap protection apply if my employer files for H-1B while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working in your Health IT role during this period without a new EAD. USCIS confirms cap-gap eligibility through your I-20 and the H-1B receipt notice.
Where can I find Health Information Technology jobs that sponsor STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Health IT roles from employers already enrolled in E-Verify, so you can identify positions where your STEM OPT extension is eligible without manually verifying each employer. Filtering by role type and authorization status narrows your search to companies that understand the I-983 process and have filed for STEM OPT students before.
