Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Clinical Informatics Specialist
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to an eligible STEM field. Health informatics and biomedical informatics degrees typically qualify, but confirm with your DSO before accepting any offer.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
Ask the hiring team directly whether the employer is currently enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. Enrollment status can lapse, and your STEM OPT authorization is invalid without an active, enrolled employer.
Target health systems filing I-983 training plans
Large hospital networks and integrated health systems run formal training programs and have HR teams experienced with I-983 documentation. Smaller clinics often lack the infrastructure to complete the training plan correctly.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified employers
Search Clinical Informatics Specialist roles on Migrate Mate to find employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment and OPT hiring history. This cuts the research time you'd otherwise spend vetting each employer manually.
Align your I-983 training goals with the job description
Write specific, measurable learning objectives tied to clinical data systems, EHR workflows, or interoperability standards. Generic training plans get rejected. Use the actual job responsibilities to draft goals your employer can evaluate.

Find Clinical Informatics Specialist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a health informatics or biomedical informatics degree qualify for STEM OPT?
Health informatics and biomedical informatics degrees are listed under eligible STEM CIP codes, so graduates in those fields can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Computer science and information systems degrees used in clinical informatics roles also qualify. Confirm your specific CIP code with your DSO, since degree titles vary by institution and some programs use codes that fall outside the eligible list.
What does an employer need to do to support a STEM OPT extension for this role?
The employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and agree to complete Form I-983, the training plan document that outlines your learning goals, supervision structure, and how the role connects to your STEM degree. The employer also needs to report material changes in your role or compensation to your DSO. Clinical informatics positions held at health systems with dedicated HR teams tend to handle this process more reliably than smaller organizations.
How do I find Clinical Informatics Specialist jobs where the employer is already enrolled in E-Verify?
Browse Clinical Informatics Specialist listings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified E-Verify enrollment so you don't need to vet each posting manually. You can also ask recruiters directly during the screening call, before investing time in interviews. Employers who've hired OPT students before will have active enrollment and existing I-983 processes in place.
What should the I-983 training plan include for a Clinical Informatics Specialist role?
The I-983 needs specific, measurable training objectives tied to your degree field, not just a description of your job duties. For clinical informatics, that means goals around EHR system implementation, clinical data analysis, interoperability standards, or decision-support tool development. Your supervisor's name, oversight frequency, and how the role advances your STEM education must all be documented. Vague plans citing only general professional development are the most common reason DSOs flag I-983 submissions for revision.
Can I switch employers during my STEM OPT extension as a Clinical Informatics Specialist?
Yes, but each employer change requires a new I-983 training plan and your DSO must update your SEVIS record before you start working for the new employer. The new employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify. You have up to 10 days of unemployment between positions without affecting your status, and cumulative unemployment across your entire OPT and STEM OPT period cannot exceed 150 days.
