Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Environmental Remediation Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program List. Environmental engineering (14.1401), civil engineering (14.0801), and chemical engineering (14.0701) all qualify, but environmental studies degrees typically don't.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers directly whether their company is enrolled in E-Verify before you sign anything. Federal contractors and many environmental consulting firms are already enrolled due to government contract requirements, which reduces friction in your onboarding process.
Target firms holding active EPA or state remediation contracts
Environmental remediation work is heavily contract-driven. Firms with active EPA Superfund or state environmental agency contracts already operate under federal contractor rules, making E-Verify enrollment standard and STEM OPT paperwork a familiar process for their HR teams.
Structure your I-983 around site-specific technical work
Your I-983 training plan must connect your daily tasks to your STEM degree objectives. Document specific skills like contaminant fate modeling, remedial action plan design, or Phase II ESA fieldwork so DSO reviewers and USCIS can clearly trace job duties to your engineering degree.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified STEM OPT employers
Search Environmental Remediation Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to surface employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment and STEM OPT hiring history. Filtering by verified sponsorship status cuts time spent on applications to firms that can't legally employ you during your extension period.
File your extension application 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS must receive your STEM OPT extension application before your initial OPT EAD expires. Submit through your DSO at least 90 days out. A timely receipt notice lets you keep working without a gap, even if adjudication runs past your end date.

Find Environmental Remediation Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an environmental engineering degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree carries an eligible CIP code. Environmental engineering (14.1401), civil engineering (14.0801), and chemical engineering (14.0701) all appear on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Environmental science or environmental studies degrees use different CIP codes and may not qualify, so confirm your exact code with your DSO before applying for the extension.
Does my employer need E-Verify enrollment for me to work as an Environmental Remediation Engineer on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for all STEM OPT employers, and you cannot begin your extension period without it. Many environmental consulting firms and engineering contractors already hold E-Verify enrollment because they work on federal or state government contracts. Confirm enrollment with HR or check the E-Verify employer search before accepting an offer.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an Environmental Remediation Engineer role?
Your I-983 must document how your daily job duties connect to your STEM degree. For remediation roles, that means listing specific technical tasks such as site assessment, contaminant transport modeling, remedial design, or regulatory reporting and explaining which engineering competencies each develops. Your supervisor signs the form, and your DSO certifies it before USCIS receives your extension application.
Can I keep working if my STEM OPT extension is still pending when my initial OPT expires?
Yes, provided USCIS receives your extension application before your current EAD expires. A timely receipt notice gives you up to 180 days of cap-gap work authorization while adjudication continues. During that window you can stay in your Environmental Remediation Engineer role without interruption. If the application arrives late, your authorization ends on your EAD expiration date.
Where can I find Environmental Remediation Engineer jobs with verified STEM OPT employers?
Migrate Mate lists Environmental Remediation Engineer positions filtered by employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment and STEM OPT hiring history. Because the platform surfaces sponsorship-verified roles, you spend less time screening firms and more time on applications where your OPT status is already understood and accommodated by the hiring team.
