Verify your CIP code before applying
Civil Engineering (14.0801) and Transportation and Highway Engineering (14.0804) are the CIP codes most DSOs map to Roadway Engineer roles. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before submitting I-983 training plans to avoid eligibility disputes.
Check employer E-Verify status upfront
Before accepting an offer, ask HR for the company's E-Verify employer ID or verify enrollment through the E-Verify database. State DOTs and large engineering consultancies are almost always enrolled, but smaller municipal contractors often are not.
Align your I-983 training plan to PE licensure milestones
Roadway engineering training plans carry more weight when tied to Professional Engineer licensure benchmarks. Map each learning objective to specific AASHTO design tasks, AutoCAD Civil 3D deliverables, or traffic impact study work products your employer can document.
Target firms with active DOL LCA filings in transportation
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified Labor Condition Application filings in civil and transportation engineering. This surfaces firms already familiar with STEM OPT onboarding, reducing back-and-forth with HR about E-Verify and training plan requirements.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark prevailing wage before negotiating
Roadway Engineer offers must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Pull the current wage level from OFLC Wage Search before your offer call so you can identify whether the offer meets Level I or Level II thresholds for your metro area.
File your STEM OPT extension 90 days before initial OPT expires
USCIS requires the extension application to arrive before your current EAD expires. For Roadway Engineer roles that start mid-project cycle, a 90-day early filing gives your employer time to finalize the I-983 without delaying your project onboarding date.

Find Roadway Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a civil engineering degree qualify for STEM OPT extension for Roadway Engineer jobs?
Yes. Civil Engineering (CIP 14.0801) and Transportation and Highway Engineering (CIP 14.0804) are both on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, which makes graduates in those fields eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Your DSO confirms the CIP code match during the I-20 endorsement process. Verify your transcript lists one of these codes before submitting your extension application to USCIS.
What E-Verify requirements apply to employers hiring STEM OPT Roadway Engineers?
Any employer hiring a STEM OPT student must be enrolled in E-Verify for the duration of your extension, not just at onboarding. For Roadway Engineer roles, this includes prime contractors and the specific office location where you'll work. If your employer uses a staffing agency or subconsultant arrangement, the entity signing your I-983 training plan must itself hold active E-Verify enrollment, not just the prime.
What should a Roadway Engineer's I-983 training plan include?
The I-983 must connect your day-to-day engineering tasks to the STEM knowledge from your degree. For Roadway Engineer roles, this means specifying deliverables like roadway alignment design, drainage analysis, traffic volume studies, or AutoCAD Civil 3D modeling, along with measurable learning objectives and supervisor evaluation criteria. Generic descriptions of job duties are a common reason DSOs ask for revisions before endorsing the I-20 extension.
How does cap-gap protection work if my employer files an H-1B for me during STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT EAD expires, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. For Roadway Engineer roles on multi-year infrastructure projects, this continuity matters: you can keep working through the H-1B transition without a gap even if your EAD expiration falls during an active project phase. USCIS confirms cap-gap status on your I-94 record.
Where can I find Roadway Engineer jobs with employers already enrolled in E-Verify?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, which correlates with E-Verify enrollment and prior experience sponsoring international engineers. Searching by SOC code for civil and transportation engineering roles on Migrate Mate surfaces firms that have already navigated STEM OPT onboarding, which shortens the HR education process on your end.
