Confirm your degree's CIP code eligibility
Not every STEM degree automatically qualifies for the 24-month extension. Cross-check your program's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the official STEM Designated Degree Program List that USCIS publishes to confirm your field is covered before you apply.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Forward Deployed Engineering roles often appear at fast-growing startups that haven't completed E-Verify enrollment. Search the E-Verify employer search tool directly to confirm enrollment status before signing an offer, since an unenrolled employer disqualifies your STEM OPT extension entirely.
Frame your I-983 training plan around deployment cycles
Your I-983 must document how the work relates to your STEM degree. For Forward Deployed roles, tie each deployment objective to a specific technical competency from your degree, such as systems architecture or applied machine learning, so your DSO can sign off without ambiguity.
Target companies with active H-1B filing histories
Use Migrate Mate to filter Forward Deployed Engineering roles by employers who have filed H-1B visa petitions in past years, so you're pursuing positions at companies already structured to sponsor long-term work authorization rather than starting that conversation from scratch.
Address the field-relatedness test in your offer negotiation
USCIS requires that your job duties relate directly to your STEM degree. Ask the hiring manager for a written job description that explicitly names technical responsibilities. Vague titles like 'client partner' without engineering deliverables can create problems when your DSO evaluates the training plan.
Track your cap-gap window if your OPT expires mid-hiring cycle
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30. Plan your Forward Deployed Engineering start date around this window so there's no gap between OPT expiration and H-1B activation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Forward Deployed Engineering role qualify for STEM OPT authorization?
Yes, if your underlying degree is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List and the job duties directly relate to that field. Forward Deployed Engineering roles typically involve systems design, software implementation, and technical problem-solving, which map well to computer science and engineering degrees. Your DSO will confirm the connection when reviewing your I-983 training plan before approving the extension.
How do I find Forward Deployed Engineering jobs where the employer is already enrolled in E-Verify?
Migrate Mate surfaces Forward Deployed Engineering roles filtered for employers with verified sponsorship history, so you're not manually cross-referencing every company against the E-Verify employer search. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT, and confirming it before you apply saves you from pursuing roles that can't support your authorization.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Forward Deployed Engineering position?
Your I-983 must describe how each major job function connects to your STEM degree. For Forward Deployed roles, that means listing technical deliverables like architecture reviews, integration work, or on-site debugging sessions alongside the degree competencies they draw from. Both you and your employer's authorized representative sign it, and your DSO must approve it before your extension is filed with USCIS.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my employer loses E-Verify enrollment after I start?
Your authorization is tied to your employer's continued E-Verify participation. If your employer loses enrollment, you're required to stop working and must either find a new E-Verify-enrolled employer and file an updated I-983, or your STEM OPT extension is no longer valid. USCIS treats this as a material change in employment conditions, so notify your DSO immediately if your employer's status changes.
Can cap-gap cover me if my OPT expires before my H-1B start date in a Forward Deployed Engineering role?
Cap-gap protection extends your work authorization automatically if your employer files a timely H-1B petition before your OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the lottery. Your authorization continues through September 30 of that fiscal year, letting you keep working in your Forward Deployed Engineering role without interruption. Your EAD card itself won't reflect this, but the extension is legally valid under the cap-gap rule.
