Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Servicenow Administrator
Verify your CIP code matches the role
Check your degree's CIP code against the STEM-designated list maintained by ICE. ServiceNow Administrator roles typically align with computer and information systems management, but your DSO confirms the match before you file the I-983 training plan.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter for the employer's E-Verify Company ID before signing anything. An employer that isn't enrolled can't legally employ you on STEM OPT extension, no matter how willing they are to sponsor future H-1B visa status.
Build your I-983 around ServiceNow-specific learning goals
USCIS reviews whether your training plan ties directly to your STEM degree. Document specific goals like implementing ITIL workflows, configuring CMDB structures, or administering ServiceNow instances so the plan reflects your technical education, not just your job description.
Target employers with active IT service management contracts
Federal contractors and large enterprises running ServiceNow at scale are the heaviest users of this platform. Use Migrate Mate to filter STEM OPT-eligible employers by role category and E-Verify status so you're applying where your authorization actually works.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Your employer must pay the prevailing wage for your SOC code and location. Pull the wage level for your role using OFLC Wage Search before negotiations so you know whether an offer meets DOL standards and won't create a compliance gap later.
File the I-983 training plan within the required window
USCIS requires you to submit the I-983 within 10 days of starting STEM OPT employment. Delays can jeopardize your status. Have your employer sign off on the learning objectives section before your start date so you're not scrambling after day one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a ServiceNow Administrator role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree falls under a STEM-designated CIP code such as computer and information systems management or management information systems. The role itself must also connect directly to that degree field. Your DSO confirms CIP code eligibility and signs off on your I-983 training plan before you begin the extension period.
What E-Verify requirement applies to employers hiring STEM OPT students?
Every employer who hires a STEM OPT student must be enrolled in E-Verify, the federal employment eligibility verification system. You can ask a recruiter for the company's E-Verify Company ID to confirm enrollment independently. Working for a non-enrolled employer on STEM OPT extension violates your status, even if the employer intends to sponsor an H-1B later.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a ServiceNow Administrator position?
The I-983 must describe specific learning goals that tie your day-to-day work to your STEM degree. For a ServiceNow Administrator, that means documenting objectives like administering ITSM modules, configuring workflow automation, or managing CMDB data integrity. Generic job descriptions won't satisfy USCIS. Both you and your employer must sign the form, and your DSO must receive a copy within 10 days of your start date.
How does cap-gap protection apply if my employer files an H-1B petition during my STEM OPT period?
If your employer files a timely H-1B petition before your OPT EAD expires and USCIS selects you in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You don't need to file anything separately. Check your I-20 and EAD expiration dates carefully, and confirm with your DSO that your SEVIS record reflects the cap-gap extension.
Where can I find ServiceNow Administrator jobs that are open to STEM OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by E-Verify enrollment status and visa authorization type, so you can browse ServiceNow Administrator openings specifically posted by employers who are set up to hire STEM OPT students. Searching through a general job board doesn't tell you whether an employer is E-Verify enrolled, which is the threshold requirement for your extension to be valid.
