Verify your CIP code before applying
SAM roles typically accept degrees in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Management Information Systems. Cross-check your degree's CIP code against the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program list before targeting roles, so you don't waste applications on mismatched employers.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your recruiter for the employer's E-Verify company ID or check enrollment status directly through the E-Verify portal. An unenrolled employer cannot legally sponsor your STEM OPT extension, even after a signed offer letter.
Build your I-983 around SAM-specific learning objectives
Generic training plans draw DSO scrutiny. Map your I-983 goals to concrete SAM deliverables: software license audits, ITAM tool implementation, or contract negotiation cycles. USCIS expects a direct connection between your STEM degree and day-to-day job functions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for E-Verify employers hiring in SAM
Searching broadly wastes your limited OPT timeline. Migrate Mate surfaces Software Asset Management roles at employers already enrolled in E-Verify, so you're only applying where your extension is actually viable from day one.
Target employers with active SAM vendor relationships
Companies managing enterprise contracts with major software vendors run structured ITAM programs that generate consistent SAM analyst demand. Focus your search on large tech, financial services, and healthcare organizations where license compliance is a dedicated function, not an afterthought.
Request the I-983 before your start date not after
Your DSO must receive a completed, employer-signed I-983 to authorize the STEM OPT extension. Many STEM OPT delays happen because students wait until onboarding to raise it. Bring it up during offer negotiation so HR can loop in legal before your first day.

Find Software Asset Management JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Asset Management role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title alone. If your degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related STEM field carries a qualifying CIP code, and your SAM role directly applies that training, you can qualify. USCIS evaluates the connection between your degree and your actual job duties, so vague job descriptions create risk. Ask your DSO to confirm before you apply.
How do I know if a Software Asset Management employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search employer enrollment status through the E-Verify portal's employer search tool. Ask the recruiter directly for the company's E-Verify company ID number during the offer stage. Enrollment is mandatory for every STEM OPT employer, and you cannot legally begin the extension with an unenrolled company regardless of what their offer letter says.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a SAM role?
Your I-983 must detail specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. For Software Asset Management, that means listing concrete tasks: software license audits, ITAM platform management, compliance reporting, or vendor contract analysis. Generic descriptions like 'support IT operations' are routinely flagged. USCIS expects a clear, traceable relationship between your coursework and your day-to-day responsibilities.
Where can I find Software Asset Management jobs open to STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Software Asset Management roles at employers already enrolled in E-Verify, which removes the guesswork from your job search. Because STEM OPT requires E-Verify enrollment as a hard prerequisite, filtering for that requirement upfront saves you from investing time in applications at employers who can't legally sponsor your extension.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my SAM job offer is delayed past my OPT end date?
If you've filed your STEM OPT extension application before your initial OPT EAD expires, you get a 180-day automatic extension of work authorization while USCIS processes your case. File early, because a gap between your EAD expiration and an approved extension means you cannot work legally. Your DSO needs the I-983 signed and submitted with enough lead time to avoid that gap.
