Verify your CIP code matches SRE
Check that your degree's CIP code falls under computer science, electrical engineering, or a related STEM category. SRE roles typically align with SOC code 15-1244. A mismatch between your CIP code and the role's SOC code can trigger a DSO denial of your extension request.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before signing anything. You can cross-check by searching the employer's name in the E-Verify employer search tool. An employer that isn't enrolled cannot legally hire you on STEM OPT, regardless of intent.
Target infrastructure teams with I-983 precedent
Prioritize SRE teams that have sponsored STEM OPT students before. Ask during interviews whether the company has an existing I-983 template for SRE or software engineering roles. A team with no prior OPT experience will slow down your training plan approval significantly.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified SRE employers
Search Migrate Mate for SRE Engineer roles filtered to E-Verify-enrolled employers with STEM OPT hiring history. This eliminates the manual verification step and surfaces companies whose job descriptions already map to STEM-eligible SOC codes for site reliability and infrastructure roles.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan before day one
Push to finalize the I-983 training plan during the offer stage, not after you start. SRE training plans should specify concrete learning goals around observability, incident response, and systems automation. A vague plan risks rejection by your DSO and delays your extension activation.
Check prevailing wage alignment using OFLC Wage Search
Look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location using OFLC Wage Search before evaluating offers. STEM OPT employers must pay at least the same wage as similarly employed U.S. workers, and underpaying can jeopardize both your extension and any future H-1B visa petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SRE Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, SRE Engineer roles qualify when your employer maps the position to a STEM-eligible SOC code, most commonly 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators) or 15-1252 (Software Developers). Your degree must carry a STEM-designated CIP code in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. Confirm the SOC mapping with your DSO before submitting your extension application to USCIS.
What does the I-983 training plan need to cover for an SRE role?
The I-983 must document specific, measurable learning objectives tied to site reliability engineering, such as incident response workflows, monitoring and observability tooling, capacity planning, and automation engineering. Generic descriptions like 'software development tasks' are frequently rejected by DSOs. Your employer's engineering manager typically signs the plan, and USCIS may audit it, so concrete technical goals are essential.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Search the employer's legal company name in the E-Verify employer search tool maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. Note that some large employers enroll subsidiaries separately, so confirm the specific hiring entity, not just the parent brand. If the company isn't listed, it cannot legally employ you under STEM OPT, and you'd need to request enrollment before your start date.
How does cap-gap affect me as an SRE Engineer on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working in your SRE role without interruption. USCIS issues an EAD extension reflecting cap-gap status, and your employer should update your I-9 accordingly.
Where can I find SRE Engineer jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters SRE Engineer listings to show only employers enrolled in E-Verify with a history of hiring STEM OPT students. This saves you from applying to roles where the company has no OPT infrastructure or lacks E-Verify enrollment. You can narrow results by location, company size, and SOC code to match your extension eligibility requirements.
