Sterile Processing Tech Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sterile processing tech in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license to work as a sterile processing tech, but most hospitals require or strongly prefer the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential issued by IAHCSMM. The typical path is completing a sterile processing certificate program at a New York community college or vocational school, gaining hands-on clinical hours, and then sitting for the CRCST exam. Large systems like NYC Health + Hospitals and Northwell Health often hire candidates who are exam-eligible and pursuing certification.
How much do sterile processing teches make in New York?
Sterile processing teches in New York earn a median of about $57,320 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,140 for the lowest 10% to over $71,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sterile processing techs in New York?
Employers hiring sterile processing techs in New York right now include Bassett Healthcare Network, Catholic Health System, and Massena Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's high density of academic medical centers and large health systems means full-time, benefited positions are more common here than in many other states.
Which New York cities have the most sterile processing tech jobs?
Cooperstown, Buffalo, and Jamestown have the most sterile processing tech openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its concentration of major hospital systems and academic medical centers, while Buffalo and Albany reflect the large regional health networks anchored by institutions like Kaleida Health and Albany Medical Center that serve substantial upstate populations.
Are there remote sterile processing tech jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Sterile processing is a hands-on clinical role performed on-site in hospitals and surgical facilities, so nearly all positions require in-person work. About 0% of sterile processing tech openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those are almost exclusively in training coordination or quality oversight functions rather than direct instrument processing.
How can I get hired as a sterile processing tech in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a sterile processing certificate program at a New York community college, such as those offered through CUNY or SUNY affiliates, and applying directly to hospital systems with new-hire training tracks. NYC Health + Hospitals and Northwell Health both hire candidates who are completing or have just completed a program. Lateral moves from central supply aide, surgical technologist trainee, or operating room assistant roles also open doors, and being CRCST exam-eligible at time of application gives candidates a clear edge over those with no credential progress.
Where can I find and apply to sterile processing tech jobs in New York?
