Tips for Your Sterile Processing Tech Job Search
List certifications above your experience
Recruiters scanning sterile processing tech resumes filter first by CRCST or CSPDT certification status. Put your certification name, number, and renewal date in a dedicated credentials section at the top, above your work history, so it's impossible to miss.
Tailor your resume to the sterilizer used
Job postings often specify STERIS, Getinge, or Belimed autoclaves. Mirror the exact equipment name from the posting in your resume. Applicant tracking systems discard resumes that list only generic terms like 'steam sterilization' when the employer searched for a brand name.
Target openings by shift before location
Most sterile processing departments run overnight and weekend shifts that go unfilled longer than day shifts. Applying to off-hours openings at facilities you'd otherwise overlook significantly reduces your competition pool without requiring you to relocate.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists sterile processing tech openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare case counts and throughput for interviews
Hiring managers ask how many instrument trays or case carts you processed per shift. Know your numbers from your last role. Candidates who answer with specifics stand out against those who give vague answers about being 'detail-oriented' or 'team players.'
Follow up with the sterile processing supervisor directly
Many openings list a generic HR contact, but the hiring decision sits with the SPD or CS supervisor. After applying, call the department directly and ask to speak with the lead tech or supervisor. A brief professional introduction before your interview separates you from applicants who only submit online.
Sterile Processing Tech Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most sterile processing techs?
The companies hiring the most sterile processing techs right now include Baylor Scott & White Health, Houston Methodist, and Norton Healthcare, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large health systems and ambulatory surgery center networks tend to post the highest volume of openings due to high turnover and expansion of outpatient facilities.
How many sterile processing tech jobs are remote?
About 0% of sterile processing tech openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of the role. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements include sterile processing education, compliance consulting, and instrument tracking software support rather than direct decontamination or sterilization duties.
How do you become a sterile processing tech?
You become a sterile processing tech by completing an accredited training program, which most community colleges and hospital systems offer in a matter of months. After finishing your coursework, you gain hands-on experience in a facility's sterile processing department, then sit for the CRCST exam through IAHCSMM or the CSPDT exam through CBSPD. Many states require certification within a set period of employment, so check your state's specific rules before applying.
Can you get hired as a sterile processing tech with no experience?
Yes, many hospitals and surgery centers hire sterile processing techs with no prior experience if you've completed a formal training program and are working toward certification. Entry-level postings often list certification eligibility rather than current certification as the requirement. Volunteering or completing an externship in a hospital's central sterile department strengthens your application significantly compared to candidates who only completed classroom training.
What does the sterile processing tech interview process look like?
The sterile processing tech interview typically starts with an HR phone screen focused on availability, shift flexibility, and certification status. A second round with the SPD supervisor or lead tech covers hands-on knowledge, including decontamination workflows, sterilization cycle parameters, and instrument identification. Some facilities include a brief practical assessment or facility tour before extending an offer. The full process usually wraps up in a few weeks for most applicants.
Where can I find and apply to sterile processing tech jobs?
You can find and apply to sterile processing tech jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from hospitals, surgery centers, and outpatient clinics across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your certification level, preferred shift, and location, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
