Medical Laboratory Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical laboratory technician in New York?
New York State requires medical laboratory technicians to hold a license issued by the New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions before performing clinical testing. Candidates must complete an accredited associate degree program in clinical laboratory technology and pass a qualifying examination such as the ASCP MLT certification exam. New York is one of a small number of states with its own licensing requirement, so candidates relocating from other states must apply for a New York license separately.
Which companies hire medical laboratory technicians in New York?
Employers hiring medical laboratory technicians in New York right now include Albany Medical Center, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Columbia University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and the presence of major commercial reference laboratory operations in the metro area generate consistent, year-round openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most medical laboratory technician jobs?
Syracuse, Albany, and Rochester account for the largest share of medical laboratory technician openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its dense concentration of academic medical centers, public hospitals, and commercial reference labs, while Buffalo and Albany support steady demand through regional hospital systems and state public health laboratory facilities serving their surrounding communities.
Are there remote medical laboratory technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Medical laboratory technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring direct handling of specimens and operation of on-site instrumentation, so most roles are fully on-site. About 0% of medical laboratory technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve laboratory data review, quality assurance oversight, or technical consulting rather than bench work.
How can I get hired as a medical laboratory technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for laboratory assistant or phlebotomist roles at large New York hospital systems such as Northwell Health or NYC Health + Hospitals, which regularly hire candidates without full MLT experience into support positions while they complete licensure. New York community colleges offering accredited clinical laboratory technology programs often have clinical rotation agreements with regional hospitals that translate directly into job offers. Earning New York State licensure and ASCP certification before applying puts entry-level candidates ahead of those still in process.
