Structural Designer Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a structural designer in New Jersey?
Most structural designers in New Jersey start with a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, then pursue Engineer-in-Training status by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam administered through the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Working under a licensed Professional Engineer builds the experience needed to advance. Firms in New Jersey commonly hire designers at the EIT stage, and a PE license significantly broadens project responsibility and career options.
How much do structural designers make in New Jersey?
Structural designers in New Jersey earn a median of about $104,660 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,640 for the lowest 10% to over $169,220 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire structural designers in New Jersey?
Employers hiring structural designers in New Jersey right now include Kiewit, Ardurra, and Stantec, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's concentration of transportation agencies and large engineering and construction firms means demand is steady across both public infrastructure and private commercial projects.
Which New Jersey cities have the most structural designer jobs?
Woodcliff Lake, Camden, and Cherry Hill account for the largest share of structural designer openings in New Jersey. Newark and Jersey City draw the most volume as hubs for transit, port infrastructure, and high-rise commercial construction, while Parsippany attracts significant hiring because several major engineering firm regional offices are headquartered there.
Are there remote structural designer jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical fields. About 50% of structural designer openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting that much of the role involves coordination with site teams and agency reviewers. Tasks most likely to be done remotely include structural calculations, report writing, and producing detailed drawings for review.
How can I get hired as a structural designer in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or co-op with a New Jersey-based engineering firm while completing or immediately after finishing a civil or structural engineering degree. Firms like WSP and HNTB run structured internship programs in their New Jersey offices that frequently convert to full-time roles. Candidates with AutoCAD or Revit skills and an EIT credential stand out. Drafting technician and CAD designer roles are common lateral entries that build the project exposure needed to move into a full designer position.
