INTRODUCTION
Barge Design Solutions is currently seeking an experienced and motivated Structural Project Engineer (PE and/or SE) to join our growing Structural Engineering team in our Birmingham, AL office.
The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in structural design, analysis, and project delivery, and will serve as the structural lead and Engineer of Record for a variety of project sectors including Industrial, Healthcare, Mission Critical/Data Centers, Commercial, Federal, and Water/Wastewater. This role is ideal for a licensed engineer who thrives in a technical leadership position, enjoys mentoring junior staff, and collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Serves as Structural Lead and Engineer of Record for projects across multiple market sectors
- Performs and oversees structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, masonry, and foundation structures
- Directs and mentors Junior Engineers and Structural Designers, providing technical guidance and quality control
- Prepares and reviews calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports for accuracy and constructability
- Coordinates with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery
- Provides technical guidance on project scope, budgets, and schedules for assignments
- Conducts site visits and construction observations to support design intent and resolve field issues
- Completes assignments within budget and schedule while working with design teams involving multiple disciplines
- Provides career development mentoring to early-career engineers
- Assists in client contact and communication, and attends client meetings
- Keeps informed of new developments and requirements affecting the organization for the purpose of recommending changes in programs or applications
- Assists with the preparation of proposals
- Stays current with applicable codes, standards, and best practices, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
- Performs other duties as required
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structures from an ABET accredited university
- Master’s degree strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of building codes (IBC, ASCE, AISC, ACI)
- Proven track record of managing large-scale projects from concept to completion
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) registration
- Structural Engineer (SE) strongly preferred
- Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience, 10+ years preferred
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret job-related manuals and documents
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with Autodesk Revit is a plus
- Experience with Mission Critical/Data Center projects is a plus
- Experience with Water/Wastewater structures is a plus
- Experience with Healthcare projects is a plus
