Student Services Counselor Jobs in Birmingham: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a student services counselor job in Birmingham?
Focus your search on Birmingham's two main hiring clusters: the higher education corridor anchored in Southside, which includes several universities and community colleges, and the Birmingham City Schools district, which posts regularly for school counselors and student support staff. Candidates who have hands-on advising experience, familiarity with FERPA compliance, and knowledge of Alabama's dual-enrollment programs tend to stand out in a market where most openings draw locally networked applicants.
Which companies hire student services counselors in Birmingham?
Companies currently hiring student services counselors in Birmingham include Mission Pet Health, Maranathan Academy, and University of Alabama, Birmingham, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Birmingham's hiring is driven by a mix of universities, community colleges, K-12 school systems, and workforce development nonprofits that serve the city's large first-generation and adult learner populations.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in Birmingham?
Yes, though remote work is limited for this role because most positions require in-person student interaction, crisis response, or on-campus presence. About 0% of student services counselor openings tied to Birmingham are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to be in career coaching, academic advising for online programs, or administrative case management rather than frontline school counseling.
How can I get a student services counselor job in Birmingham with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Birmingham is through paraprofessional or student services assistant roles at Jefferson State Community College, Lawson State Community College, or Birmingham City Schools, all of which hire support staff with a bachelor's degree and without requiring full licensure. Volunteering with Birmingham-area college access nonprofits or youth programs also builds the case management and advising experience that hiring managers look for when promoting into counselor roles.
