Student Services Counselor Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a student services counselor in Illinois?
To work as a student services counselor in Illinois public schools, you need an Illinois Professional Educator License with a School Counselor endorsement, issued by the Illinois State Board of Education. This requires completing an approved master's-level school counseling program and passing the edTPA or equivalent assessment. For postsecondary or community-based roles, a master's degree in counseling or a related field is typically expected, though the state license may not be required depending on the employer.
Which companies hire student services counselors in Illinois?
Illinois student services counselor roles are posted by OSF HealthCare, Jewel Osco, and Waubonsee Community College and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Illinois's large K-12 districts, community college networks, and public university systems generate some of the most consistent hiring volume in the state.
Which Illinois cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
Chicago, Peoria, and Sugar Grove have the most student services counselor openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates the list because of its dense network of public schools, charter organizations, and community colleges, while Champaign-Urbana draws heavily from the University of Illinois flagship campus, and Springfield sees steady demand through state government education agencies and regional school districts.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're limited. The role is largely relationship-driven and campus-based, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 25% of student services counselor openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how infrequently the work can move fully off-site. Virtual academic advising and tele-counseling positions at online-focused colleges are the most consistent source of remote openings.
How can I get hired as a student services counselor in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a supervised school counseling practicum or internship embedded in an Illinois-approved master's program, which many large districts like Chicago Public Schools and Elgin U-46 formalize into new-counselor pipelines. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as academic advisor, college access coordinator, or school social worker regularly make lateral moves into counseling positions. Holding an Illinois substitute educator credential or working as a paraprofessional while finishing your degree also strengthens your candidacy with district hiring teams.
Where can I find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings. Search the available roles, identify the ones that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
