Student Services Counselor Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a student services counselor in Michigan?
The path depends on the setting. For K-12 public schools, Michigan requires a school counselor endorsement through the Michigan Department of Education, which involves a master's degree in counseling or a related field and completion of a supervised practicum. For higher education and community college roles, a master's degree is typically expected but no state licensure is required. Candidates working in college access or nonprofit settings may enter with a bachelor's degree and build credentials through on-the-job experience.
Which companies hire student services counselors in Michigan?
Michigan student services counselor roles are posted by Magna International, Corewell Health, and Aspire Rural Health Systems and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Michigan's dense network of public universities, community college districts, and large urban K-12 systems creates steady openings across both traditional academic and student support tracks.
Which Michigan cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
Detroit, Lansing, and Marlette lead Michigan for student services counselor openings. Detroit's concentration of public school districts, Wayne County Community College District, and social service organizations drives volume there, while Ann Arbor and East Lansing reflect the anchoring presence of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, both of which maintain large student affairs and advising staffs year-round.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're limited. About 8% of student services counselor openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most roles involve direct student interaction, on-campus presence, or in-person case management. The positions most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are those focused on online program advising, virtual college access coaching, or administrative coordination rather than direct walk-in or classroom-based counseling.
How can I get hired as a student services counselor in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a graduate assistantship or practicum placement embedded in a Michigan university's counseling or student affairs program, where institutions like Western Michigan University and Central Michigan University place students directly into advising offices. Many Michigan community colleges also hire academic advisors or student success coaches at the bachelor's level for entry roles. Lateral moves from roles like admissions representative, academic tutor, or residence hall coordinator are common, and holding or actively pursuing a school counselor endorsement through the Michigan Department of Education gives candidates a clear edge for K-12 openings.
Where can I find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings from universities, community colleges, K-12 districts, and nonprofit organizations. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
