Student Services Counselor Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a student services counselor in Missouri?
The path depends on your setting. For K-12 public schools, Missouri requires a Pupil Personnel Services certification issued through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which involves completing an approved graduate counseling program and a supervised practicum. For higher education and community college roles, employers typically require a master's degree in student affairs, higher education, or counseling, but no state license is mandated beyond the school-based credential.
Which companies hire student services counselors in Missouri?
Missouri student services counselor roles are posted by Siemens, University of Central Missouri, and Washington University in St. Louis and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Missouri's combination of large public university systems, an extensive community college network, and major urban K-12 districts makes it one of the more consistent states for ongoing counseling openings throughout the year.
Which Missouri cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
St. Louis, Warrensburg, and Kansas City have the most student services counselor openings in Missouri. St. Louis and Kansas City lead due to their concentration of four-year universities, community colleges, and large public school districts, while Columbia's market is driven by the University of Missouri's main campus and the surrounding educational institutions that anchor mid-Missouri hiring.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in Missouri?
Yes, but they're limited. About 39% of student services counselor openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the role's fundamentally in-person nature. The functions most likely to be performed remotely or in hybrid arrangements are virtual academic advising, online student success coaching, and outreach roles tied to distance-learning programs at Missouri community colleges and universities.
How can I get hired as a student services counselor in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a graduate assistantship or paraprofessional advising role at a Missouri university or community college while completing your master's degree. The University of Missouri System and institutions like Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City regularly hire advising assistants and student success coaches who are still in graduate programs. Lateral moves from academic tutoring, residence life coordination, or career services assistant roles are common pathways, and completing Missouri's Pupil Personnel Services practicum requirement gives K-12 applicants a concrete credential that distinguishes them.
Where can I find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Missouri?
You can find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Missouri on Migrate Mate, which lists current Missouri openings. Find roles that fit your experience and setting, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
