School Counselor Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school counselor in Missouri?
To become a school counselor in Missouri, you must earn a master's degree in school counseling from an accredited program and obtain a Missouri School Counselor certificate through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The process includes completing a supervised counseling practicum, passing the Praxis School Counselor exam, and submitting your application through the DESE educator certification portal. Missouri does not require a separate state counseling license for school-based work beyond this DESE certification.
Which companies hire school counselors in Missouri?
Missouri school counselor roles are posted by Leidos, Archdiocese of St. Louis, and Hazelwood school district and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Missouri's largest urban and suburban school districts consistently account for the highest volume of postings, alongside community college systems and charter networks throughout the state.
Which Missouri cities have the most school counselor jobs?
St. Louis, Columbia, and Florissant lead Missouri for school counselor openings, reflecting where the state's largest public school systems and higher education institutions are concentrated. Kansas City and St. Louis drive volume through their sizeable urban districts and surrounding suburban systems, while Springfield anchors southwest Missouri with a large unified district and Missouri State University nearby generating consistent demand.
Are there remote school counselor jobs in Missouri?
Yes, but they're rare. About 25% of school counselor openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, which reflects the hands-on, relationship-based nature of the role in school settings. The positions most likely to carry a remote component are college advising roles with virtual caseloads or counseling coordinator positions focused on curriculum and program development rather than direct student services.
How can I get hired as a school counselor in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your master's-level practicum or internship inside a Missouri school district, since many districts hire counselors they have already supervised. Large systems such as Kansas City Public Schools and the St. Louis metropolitan-area districts post provisional or intern counselor roles that allow candidates to work under a fully certified counselor while finishing licensure requirements. Candidates who already hold a Missouri teaching certificate or who have worked as a school social worker or paraprofessional have a meaningful advantage, and finishing the DESE certification process before applying removes the largest hiring barrier.
Where can I find and apply to school counselor jobs in Missouri?
You can find and apply to school counselor jobs in Missouri on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from districts and institutions across the state. Search for roles that match your certification level and preferred region, then apply directly to the ones that fit your background and availability.
