Entry Level Substation Electrical Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an entry level substation electrical engineer job?
Focus on coursework and hands-on experience in power systems, protective relaying, and AutoCAD or MicroStation. Internships at utilities or engineering consultancies carry significant weight at this stage. Candidates who can demonstrate familiarity with NERC reliability standards, substation design basics, or equipment like transformers and switchgear stand out. A strong senior capstone project or lab portfolio can offset a thin professional history.
Which companies hire entry level substation electrical engineers?
Companies hiring entry level substation electrical engineers right now include Sargent & Lundy, Mesa Associates, and Mesa Associates, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Utilities, investor-owned power companies, and electrical engineering consulting firms tend to recruit the most actively at the junior and new grad level.
Are there remote entry level substation electrical engineer jobs?
Yes, though most roles at this level are on-site given the field-based nature of substation work. About 11% of entry level substation electrical engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve design, drafting, or project coordination rather than hands-on commissioning or site inspection.
Are these new grad substation electrical engineer jobs?
Yes, the listings here include new grad, recent graduate, and junior substation electrical engineer roles. A new grad-friendly posting typically welcomes zero to two years of experience, counts internships or co-ops toward the requirement, and accepts a strong academic or portfolio background in lieu of full-time work history. Look for postings that list a degree requirement alongside optional experience.
Which industries hire the most entry level substation electrical engineers?
Entry Level substation electrical engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Energy, and Construction & Real Estate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Grid modernization, renewable energy integration, and ongoing infrastructure investment are driving consistent entry level hiring across these sectors.
