Electrical Utility Construction

Position Summary

The Utility Safety Superintendent is Gregory Electric's senior field safety representative for electrical utility operations. Working with project managers, general foremen, foremen, and employees, this position identifies and corrects hazards, coaches safe work, investigates incidents, delivers training, and verifies compliance. The successful candidate must understand utility construction, spend most workweeks on active projects, address unsafe decisions professionally, and follow corrective actions through closure.

Primary Responsibilities

•
Provide field safety oversight and conduct documented inspections, audits, and hazard assessments for overhead and underground utility projects.

•
Coach employees, supervisors, and subcontractors; correct unsafe conditions and behavior with field leadership.

•
Exercise stop-work authority when an imminent-danger condition, serious safety violation, or unacceptable risk is identified.

•
Participate in pre-job planning, safety meetings, and reviews of energized work and other high-risk activities.

•
Assist with investigations involving injuries, near misses, vehicle events, and property damage; identify contributing factors and help develop practical corrective actions.

•
Deliver classroom and field training on electrical, work-zone, excavation, fall-protection, PPE, equipment, and other assigned subjects.

•
Verify compliance with company safety policies, client requirements, OSHA standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.

•
Evaluate subcontractor safety performance and work with project leadership to correct deficiencies.

•
Maintain accurate inspection, investigation, training, and corrective-action records; track deficiencies through documented closure.

•
Identify recurring hazards and performance trends and communicate significant findings to Utility Operations leadership and the Corporate Director of Safety and Training.

•
Support improvement of company safety programs and, when assigned, report potential utility workmanship or specification concerns to operations leadership.

These duties are not all inclusive and may change based on company and project needs.

Required Experience and Qualifications

•
Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in electrical utility construction, utility safety, or utility field supervision.

•
Working knowledge of the overhead and underground electrical utility construction activities applicable to assigned projects.

•
Demonstrated ability to recognize electrical, excavation, work-zone, fall, rigging, lifting, and mobile equipment hazards.

•
Experience leading crews, coaching supervisors, conducting inspections, enforcing safety requirements, or performing comparable field leadership duties.

•
Ability to challenge unsafe decisions regardless of seniority while maintaining productive working relationships.

•
OSHA 30-hour Construction training completed or obtained within 90 days of employment.

•
Strong communication, documentation, organization, and time-management skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.

•
Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving-record requirements.

•
Ability to pass required pre-employment drug screening and government background checks.

Preferred Backgrounds and Credentials

•
Utility safety professional or superintendent; journeyman lineman with supervisory experience; or utility foreman, general foreman, or superintendent with significant safety responsibility.

•
Certified Utility Safety Professional or Construction Health and Safety Technician.

•
OSHA 500 or OSHA 510 training and First Aid CPR AED provider or instructor credentials.

•
NCCER, utility safety, competent-person, or instructor credentials relevant to assigned operations.

Regulatory and Technical Knowledge

The successful candidate should be able to apply the requirements that govern assigned utility work. Relevant knowledge includes the following standards and hazard areas, as applicable to company operations:

•
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269 and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart V.

•
Electrical transmission and distribution of construction, energized work, minimum approach distances, grounding, and equipotential-zone practices.

•
Excavation, confined spaces, fall protection, cranes, rigging, material handling, mobile equipment, and work-zone traffic control.

•
DOT and FMCSA requirements, NFPA 70E, the National Electrical Code, client rules, and utility procedures where applicable.

Physical Demands

•
Communicate effectively with employees and teams across active job-sites.

•
Stand, walk, climb, crawl, kneel, navigate construction areas, operate assigned tools or vehicles, and lift or carry up to 60 pounds when required.

•
Wear required PPE, including a hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, respirator, fall-arrest equipment, and safety-toe footwear as applicable.

Work Environment

Frequent work around electrical systems, energized equipment, moving equipment, fumes, vibration, and mechanical parts.

Primarily field based, with limited office and training room time.
