Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in Illinois?
To work as a surgical dental assistant in Illinois, you must register with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation as a Dental Assistant. Registration requires completing an accredited dental assisting program or demonstrating qualifying work experience, passing a background check, and maintaining current CPR certification. Candidates who want to take X-rays independently must also pass the Illinois radiation safety examination, which is administered through an approved testing provider.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in Illinois?
Companies currently hiring surgical dental assistants in Illinois include OSF HealthCare, Northwestern Medicine, and Endeavor Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Illinois's concentration of dental service organizations and hospital-affiliated oral surgery departments creates consistent year-round openings across both metropolitan Chicago and the broader suburban and downstate markets.
Which Illinois cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
The Illinois cities with the most surgical dental assistant openings are Chicago, Springfield, and Rockford. Chicago drives the largest share of demand through its dense network of oral surgery practices, academic medical centers, and dental service organizations, while suburban hubs like Naperville and Schaumburg attract openings because large regional dental groups have concentrated their practices near those high-population corridors.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they are rare. Surgical dental assisting is a hands-on chairside role that requires physical presence in a clinical setting, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 0% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those are almost exclusively administrative or patient coordination duties layered onto an otherwise on-site position.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited dental assisting program at an Illinois community college, such as those offered by Parkland College or Moraine Valley Community College, then targeting new-graduate openings at large dental service organizations that run structured onboarding for entry-level assistants. Candidates moving laterally from dental receptionist or sterilization technician roles are regularly considered. Earning your Illinois DAR registration and radiation certification before applying gives you a clear edge over candidates who have not yet completed those steps.
Where can I find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings across oral surgery practices, dental service organizations, and hospital dental departments. Search the listings for roles that match your credentials and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
