What you will do:
The OR staff educator functions at 50% as OR staff educator & 50% as staff nurse. The OR staff Educator provides education and evaluation to OR nurses, ST, CSTs, sterile core techs and other OR ancillary staff members. The OR staff Educator consistently demonstrates operating room nurse clinical competency. The OR staff Educator educates & implements evidenced-based practices within OR nursing. Performs direct nursing care to patients as required, ensuring adherence to AORN recommended standards of practice, Joint Commission & IDPH standards, and all related policies, procedures, and guidelines.

3+ years of OR nursing experience scrubbing & circulating required
- Responsible for new staff onboarding and orientation including, but not limited to classroom education reinforced by hands-on experiences in the operating room.
- Directly responsible for ensuring that the integrity of the established Clinical Training Programs for Operating Room staff are delivered in their entirety without deviation; provides educational programs to develop clinical staff skills and competencies needed to meet all applicable regulatory agency requirements.
- Collaborates with the education team to develop, maintain and present educational materials to include Periop 101 (& Periop 202 for SK only), Instructor Led Training programs/orientation, initial and annual clinical staff competency and ongoing support of professional development through continuing education programs.
- Acts as preceptor and mentor to new OR staff.
- Demonstrates ability to assess staff educational needs, designs and develops curricula to meet the Operating Room staff needs. Collaborates with OR clinical manager to plan, implement, and delivery of annual educational curricula.
- Responsible to plan and design staff skills days and in-services.
- Initiates skills development programs within the parameters of established best evidence-based practices; monitors OR trends and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality/safety standards.
- Demonstrates competencies in Northshore nursing protocols; teaches and assists in the performance of all related nursing duties.
- Educates staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops.
- Makes recommendations when new knowledge indicates a need for change in policies and procedures, in collaboration with Clinical Managers & Perioperative Leaders.
- Improves and updates Operating Room Training Programs and work practices by reviewing current AORN recommended standards, literature and appropriate evidence-based educational resources.
- Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Demonstrates problem-solving abilities & effective communication and presentations skills.
- Provides direct OR nursing care as assigned; demonstrates OR scrub & circulating nurse competencies.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of infection control and prevention of transmission of blood borne pathogens as required to fulfill job responsibilities.
