Systems Engineer Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a systems engineer in Hawaii?
Most systems engineer positions in Hawaii are filled through a combination of an accredited engineering degree and relevant technical experience rather than a state-issued license. That said, roles touching public infrastructure or certain defense contracts may require Professional Engineer licensure through the Hawaii Board of Professional Engineers, Architects, Surveyors, and Landscape Architects. Candidates can also strengthen their standing with certifications such as INCOSE's Certified Systems Engineering Professional credential.
Which companies hire systems engineers in Hawaii?
Companies currently hiring systems engineers in Hawaii include Booz Allen Hamilton, WILLCOR, and BAE Systems USA, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's large defense and federal presence means many of these employers are prime contractors or agencies operating out of facilities on or near Pearl Harbor and Hickam Air Force Base.
Which Hawaii cities have the most systems engineer jobs?
Honolulu, Hilo, and Camp Smith account for the largest share of systems engineer openings in Hawaii, driven primarily by the concentration of defense installations, federal agencies, and telecommunications carriers in and around Honolulu, while smaller metro areas benefit from the satellite operations and subcontractor networks those anchor employers support.
Are there remote systems engineer jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical roles because systems engineering in Hawaii often requires on-site integration, lab work, or cleared-facility access. About 0% of systems engineer openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of many local defense and infrastructure programs. Requirements definition and documentation phases are the most likely to allow remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a systems engineer in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to associate or junior systems engineer roles with large defense contractors that recruit new graduates, including Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos, both of which run early-career programs with Hawaii-based openings. A degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or systems engineering is the baseline. Candidates without full experience benefit from internships through University of Hawaii engineering programs, a government security clearance investigation started early, and demonstrated work in requirements documentation or test planning.
Where can I find and apply to systems engineer jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to systems engineer jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current Hawaii openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
