Systems Engineer Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a systems engineer in Maryland?
Maryland does not require a state-issued license for systems engineers in most industry sectors, so the path centers on education and clearance eligibility. Most Maryland employers expect a bachelor's degree in systems, electrical, or aerospace engineering from an ABET-accredited program. A DoD-clearable background is effectively a baseline requirement for the defense-heavy Maryland market, and earning a Certified Systems Engineering Professional credential from INCOSE strengthens a candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire systems engineers in Maryland?
Employers hiring systems engineers in Maryland right now include Northrop Grumman, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and Leidos, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maryland's concentration of DoD program offices and intelligence community facilities means defense and federal IT contractors make up the largest share of active openings in the state.
Which Maryland cities have the most systems engineer jobs?
Annapolis Junction, Laurel, and Fort Meade have the most systems engineer openings in Maryland. The distribution follows major DoD installations and federal agency campuses, so suburban Washington communities like Bethesda and Greenbelt and the defense corridor stretching from Linthicum to Aberdeen pull substantial hiring even where the cities themselves are smaller.
Are there remote systems engineer jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical roles because systems engineering in Maryland is tied closely to classified programs and physical integration labs. About 38% of systems engineer openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and the remote-eligible work tends to be in requirements analysis, documentation, and model development rather than hands-on hardware integration or testing.
How can I get hired as a systems engineer in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a new-graduate or rotational engineering program at one of Maryland's large defense contractors, where Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and Leidos all run structured associate engineer cohorts in the state. A bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program and a clearable background open the door, and lateral entry from adjacent roles such as systems analyst, quality engineer, or test engineer is common. Earning a CSEP Associate designation from INCOSE before applying signals commitment to the discipline.
Where can I find and apply to systems engineer jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to systems engineer jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
