Tax Senior Associate Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax senior associate in Michigan?
Most tax senior associate roles in Michigan require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and an active CPA license or demonstrated progress toward one through the Michigan Board of Accountancy. The path typically involves passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Michigan's experience requirement under a licensed CPA. Employers generally expect candidates to have completed at least two busy seasons in a public accounting or corporate tax setting before moving into a senior associate role.
How much do tax senior associates make in Michigan?
Tax senior associates in Michigan earn a median of about $78,820 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,620 for the lowest 10% to over $131,080 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax senior associates in Michigan?
Employers hiring tax senior associates in Michigan right now include Hantz, BDO, and UHY LLP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Michigan's concentration of regional accounting firms, Big Four offices in Detroit, and the in-house tax departments of major automotive and manufacturing corporations makes the state a consistent source of senior-level tax openings year-round.
Which Michigan cities have the most tax senior associate jobs?
Detroit, Troy, and Grand Rapids account for the most tax senior associate openings in Michigan. Detroit drives the largest volume through its Big Four offices, regional firms, and the corporate tax functions of major automotive and financial services companies headquartered in the metro, while Grand Rapids reflects a growing professional services sector and Ann Arbor benefits from its concentration of technology companies and university-adjacent financial operations.
Are there remote tax senior associate jobs in Michigan?
Yes, and more than most fields. Tax senior associate work is largely analytical and documentation-based, making it well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 26% of tax senior associate openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with flexibility most common in federal compliance, tax research, and provision roles where client-site presence is not required.
How can I get hired as a tax senior associate in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a staff associate or tax associate role at a Michigan public accounting firm, where firms including Plante Moran, Doeren Mawhon, and regional offices of national firms run structured new-graduate programs that build toward senior associate promotion. Candidates who sit for or pass the CPA exam while in an entry role move faster. Adjacent roles in accounting, audit, or financial analysis at Michigan corporations also provide a credible lateral path into a tax function.
