Tax Associate Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax associate in Michigan?
Becoming a tax associate in Michigan typically starts with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field, which satisfies the educational requirement to sit for the CPA exam. Michigan CPA licensure is administered by the Michigan Board of Accountancy and requires passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination and completing a supervised experience component. Many firms hire candidates before licensure and support exam preparation as part of onboarding.
How much do tax associates make in Michigan?
Tax associates in Michigan earn a median of about $46,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $29,600 for the lowest 10% to over $77,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax associates in Michigan?
Employers hiring tax associates in Michigan right now include H&R Block, Hantz, and BDO, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Michigan's concentration of regional accounting firms, Big Four offices, and the tax departments of major automotive and manufacturing companies makes it one of the more active markets in the Midwest for this role.
Which Michigan cities have the most tax associate jobs?
Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Troy lead Michigan in tax associate openings. Detroit anchors the market as home to major firm offices and the tax functions of large automotive and financial services employers, while Grand Rapids draws openings from its growing professional services sector and Plante Moran's headquarters presence, and Ann Arbor contributes through university-adjacent finance activity and mid-market firms.
Are there remote tax associate jobs in Michigan?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, because tax work is largely document-driven and can travel well outside an office. About 0% of tax associate openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how widely firms have adopted flexible arrangements post-pandemic. Tax compliance and individual return preparation tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while client-facing advisory and audit-support work is more likely to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a tax associate in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a public accounting internship converted to a full-time associate offer, a route that Plante Moran, BDO, and the Big Four Michigan offices run as structured programs each year. Candidates who have passed one or more CPA exam sections stand out in screening, even without a completed license. Adjacent starting points include bookkeeping, accounts payable, or payroll roles inside Michigan's large manufacturing and automotive employers, which often post internal transfers into their corporate tax teams for candidates who demonstrate accounting fundamentals.
Where can I find and apply to tax associate jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to tax associate jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings updated in real time. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and preferred location or work arrangement, and apply directly to each listing that fits.
