Tax Associate Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax associate in Massachusetts?
Most Massachusetts employers require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, and a CPA license or active candidacy is the most valued credential. The Massachusetts Board of Public Accountancy oversees CPA licensure in the state, which requires passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting the Massachusetts education and experience requirements. Candidates without a CPA can still enter the field in staff-level roles while working toward licensure.
How much do tax associates make in Massachusetts?
Tax associates in Massachusetts earn a median of about $58,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,560 for the lowest 10% to over $82,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax associates in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring tax associates in Massachusetts right now include H&R Block, KLR, and RSM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's deep concentration of financial services firms, Big Four offices, and regional accounting practices in the Greater Boston area makes it one of the more active states for consistent tax associate hiring year-round.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most tax associate jobs?
Boston, Quincy, and Waltham have the most tax associate openings in Massachusetts. Boston dominates because of its dense cluster of Big Four offices, regional CPA firms, and Fortune 500 corporate tax departments, while Worcester draws openings from regional accounting firms and healthcare institutions like UMass Memorial, and Springfield anchors hiring in western Massachusetts through manufacturing and insurance sector employers.
Are there remote tax associate jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 56% of tax associate openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves reviewing returns, preparing workpapers, and running software-based analysis. Tax compliance and research roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while client-facing advisory and audit-support positions more often require in-office or hybrid schedules.
How can I get hired as a tax associate in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff tax associate role at a regional or Big Four firm through a new-graduate hire program. Boston-area offices of firms like Grant Thornton and RSM run structured associate programs that bring on candidates directly from Massachusetts accounting programs at schools like Bentley University or Northeastern. Internship-to-offer conversions are common, and candidates who have passed at least one CPA exam section or hold a master's in taxation stand out in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to tax associate jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to tax associate jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current Massachusetts openings from employers actively hiring right now. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly from the listing.
