Tax Associate Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax associate in New York?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, and many prefer candidates who are on track for CPA licensure through the New York State Board of Public Accountancy, which administers the Uniform CPA Examination and sets the education and experience requirements. Completing the required semester hours in accounting and business courses before graduation puts candidates in the strongest position. Many large New York firms hire new graduates into structured associate programs while they complete their CPA requirements.
How much do tax associates make in New York?
Tax associates in New York earn a median of about $71,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,010 for the lowest 10% to over $125,070 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax associates in New York?
Employers hiring tax associates in New York right now include Goldman Sachs, CohnReznick, and JPMorganChase, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of Big Four and regional accounting firms, multinational corporations, and financial institutions makes it one of the deepest markets for tax associate roles in the country.
Which New York cities have the most tax associate jobs?
New York, New York City, and Rochester have the most tax associate openings in New York. New York City accounts for the greatest share by far, driven by its density of public accounting firms, investment banks, hedge funds, and corporate headquarters, while White Plains and Albany draw demand from regional firm offices, state government agencies, and the surrounding business communities.
Are there remote tax associate jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since tax compliance and review work is largely document-driven and software-based. About 32% of tax associate openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible accounting roles. Research, return preparation, and workpaper review are the functions most commonly performed remotely, while client-facing engagements and internal reviews typically require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a tax associate in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to the first-year associate or staff tax programs that Big Four and large regional firms in New York City and White Plains run specifically for recent graduates. Candidates who have completed internships at public accounting firms, passed one or more sections of the CPA exam, or earned a master's in taxation gain a meaningful edge. Adjacent roles such as tax analyst, accounting technician, or bookkeeper at a New York company or firm also provide the experience base that hiring managers look for when considering applicants without direct public accounting backgrounds.
Where can I find and apply to tax associate jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to tax associate jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, White Plains, Albany, and other markets in the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and target practice area, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
