Tax Associate Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax associate in Texas?
A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is the standard starting point for tax associate roles in Texas. Most employers expect candidates to be pursuing or to hold a CPA license issued through the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Texas's education and experience requirements. Entry-level roles at public accounting firms or corporate tax departments are the most common first positions.
How much do tax associates make in Texas?
Tax associates in Texas earn a median of about $47,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $31,110 for the lowest 10% to over $86,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax associates in Texas?
Employers hiring tax associates in Texas right now include KPMG, WEAVER, and Goldman Sachs, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy, technology, and financial services companies means both Big Four and regional accounting firms maintain steady hiring pipelines alongside large in-house corporate tax departments.
Which Texas cities have the most tax associate jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most tax associate openings in Texas. Houston drives volume through its energy sector and large corporate headquarters, Dallas attracts firms serving financial services and technology companies, and Austin's fast-growing tech and startup ecosystem has expanded demand for in-house tax associates at companies that have relocated their headquarters to the area in recent years.
Are there remote tax associate jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than many other accounting roles given the desk-based and analytical nature of tax compliance and research work. About 22% of tax associate openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a shift that accelerated after many firms updated their flexible work policies. Federal and state income tax compliance and tax research tasks tend to be the most remote-friendly, while roles involving client interaction or audit support typically require more in-office time.
How can I get hired as a tax associate in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or staff-level associate program at a Texas office of a Big Four or regional firm, which are designed for candidates without prior full-time experience. Deloitte, KPMG, and Grant Thornton run structured new-graduate programs out of their Houston and Dallas offices. Sitting for the CPA exam while still in school signals commitment and moves your application ahead of candidates who have not started. Adjacent roles such as bookkeeper, tax preparer at a seasonal firm, or accounting clerk at a Texas-based company also provide the foundational experience that leads to associate-level offers.
Where can I find and apply to tax associate jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to tax associate jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Texas employers and locations. Find the roles that fit your experience and target location, then apply directly to each one.
