Tax Associate Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax associate in Pennsylvania?
Most Pennsylvania employers require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field, with coursework satisfying the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy's education prerequisites for CPA licensure. While CPA certification is not always mandatory at the associate level, candidates actively pursuing the exam have a clear advantage. Firms look for foundational knowledge of federal tax law alongside Pennsylvania personal income tax and corporate net income tax rules specific to the Commonwealth.
How much do tax associates make in Pennsylvania?
Tax associates in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $61,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $31,200 for the lowest 10% to over $103,570 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax associates in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring tax associates in Pennsylvania right now include H&R Block, RSM, and RKL, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of Big Four and regional firm offices, along with corporate tax departments at financial services companies headquartered in the Philadelphia suburbs, means consistent openings appear across both public accounting and industry roles.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most tax associate jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Greensburg account for the greatest concentration of tax associate openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs drive the largest share, anchored by major accounting firm offices and corporate headquarters in financial services and healthcare, while Pittsburgh's accounting community supports demand through both public firms and large industrial and technology employers based in the region.
Are there remote tax associate jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than many fields, because tax associate work is primarily analytical and document-based. About 67% of tax associate openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of the role. Tax compliance, research, and return preparation tasks translate well to remote arrangements, though client-facing advisory work and busy-season team review often require at least some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a tax associate in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most direct entry path is an internship or full-time new-graduate hire at a Pennsylvania public accounting firm during recruiting season. Large regional firms such as Baker Tilly, CohnReznick, and Herbein operate Pennsylvania offices and run structured new-graduate programs that accept candidates before CPA completion. Lateral entry from bookkeeping, accounts payable, or payroll roles at Pennsylvania companies is common, and candidates who have passed at least one section of the CPA exam consistently stand out in competitive applicant pools.
Where can I find and apply to tax associate jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to tax associate jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings from employers hiring now. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to each position that fits.
