Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a therapeutic recreation specialist in Ohio?
The standard path in Ohio is to earn a bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation therapy from an accredited program, complete a supervised internship, and then sit for the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist exam administered by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Ohio does not issue a separate state license for this role, so the CTRS credential is what most Ohio employers require before hire. Maintaining that certification requires ongoing continuing education.
Which companies hire therapeutic recreation specialists in Ohio?
Ohio therapeutic recreation specialist roles are posted by Kids Thrive, State of Ohio, and Celgene Corporation and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Ohio's large integrated health systems and multi-site long-term care networks generate the most consistent volume of openings across the state.
Which Ohio cities have the most therapeutic recreation specialist jobs?
Cleveland, Ohio, and Akron have the most therapeutic recreation specialist openings in Ohio right now. Columbus leads because of its dense concentration of hospital systems and behavioral health networks, while Cleveland and Cincinnati follow closely given the major academic medical centers and large rehabilitation campuses anchored there.
Are there remote therapeutic recreation specialist jobs in Ohio?
Yes, but they're rare. Therapeutic recreation is fundamentally a hands-on, client-facing role, so most positions require in-person presence at a hospital, care facility, or community site. About 20% of therapeutic recreation specialist openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to involve program coordination, telehealth group facilitation, or administrative oversight rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a therapeutic recreation specialist in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for therapeutic recreation assistant or activity aide roles at Ohio long-term care facilities and rehabilitation hospitals, which routinely bring on candidates who are still working toward their CTRS. Large Ohio systems like OhioHealth and the MetroHealth System offer internship and fieldwork placement programs that convert to employment for strong performers. Completing your supervised clinical internship at an Ohio facility, even before sitting for the CTRS exam, puts you directly in front of hiring managers at that site.
Where can I find and apply to therapeutic recreation specialist jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to therapeutic recreation specialist jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current Ohio openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
